OT: FAILED Deer Hunting Physical

Post by Modoc ED »

I got my hunting license for the Jul 1, 2009 - Jun 30, 2010 license year along with my California Upland Game Bird Stamp and California Duck Stamp today BUT I didn't get a Deer Tag Application.

This'll be the first year (when not on U.S. Navy foreign/sea duty) since I was 12-years old (1955) that I won't be going deer hunting. My knees have gotten pretty bad and I just don't want to go through the agony of up and down hill/mountain climbing anymore. Besides, I couldn't pass the physical.

Image

Oh well, it's just a well I guess as this has been the result of some of my deer hunts in years past. Or at least something very similar.

Image

Anyway, I'll be hunting hogs, pheasants, ducks, turkeys, geese, rabbits, squirrels, coyotes, and a few others which will keep me plenty busy.

By gum, man! As long as you can hold a rifle and you can get someone to drive you to a good spot and dump you out the door of the pickup, you can go deer hunting!

Modoc ED,
Ever think of getting a ATV?
They are so nice, and they go almost anywhere.
Keep on Deer Hunting if that is only holding you back.
Last year I got a new camo Yamaha 700 Grizzly and that
thing is great. Its got power steering and the steepest hills
you go down you dont even touch the brakes.the engine
braking on those is unreal, just keep it in low and it holds the machine and it dont speed up at all.
Also the little trailors are pretty reasonable so you can pull
it behind any little car etc.My atv weighs only 600lbs.
You only live once!! Good Luck!

Hey there Modoc Ed - When deer season comes around give me a shout and

I’ll lend you my two nineteen year old nurses Bubbles and Bambi. I used to use

Hilga, but she wouldn’t put me down one time when we spotted a deer. Turns

out she thought they were cute, and didn’t want me to shoot one. The best part

was she could easily carry us both out at the same time. I could see if Tifany

(one f) and Saphire would be available. They were the stand-ins when Bubbles

and Bambi were off at a mud wrestling symposium in Florida awhile back. They

are un-proven as far as hunting goes, but would look very good in international orange

(anything). Give me a shout if I can help. Wind

At the Jefferson Proving Grounds hunt (south east Indiana, on the river) an old duffer was seen every year...same spot every year. Just parked off the road, got out his lawn chair and walked in about 50 yards and about 40-50 yards away from a cutting line.......just sat there soaking up the sun....I hope I can get out until my last days :!:

I had an idea a couple of years ago about building an electric hover round type thing that would run on tracks for disabled hunters. I think it would sell.

Hey there Modoc Ed - I took me 10 minutes to get up off my knees I was laughing so hard. This board will never cease to amaze me on what it can come up with on no notice. I do have concerns that you had, or knew where to find, a picture like that!! I'll be watching my top knot... (and prolly be in another twelve step program...) POWER STEERING?????? Even an old cripple like me doesn't need power steering. I also only need a 400cc engine to get the job done.

Hi Ed,
Did you do most of your hunting around Alturas or further South towards Likely? I have a friend who hunted for many years in the Horse Lake area. Lots of big Muleys in that area. Another friend and I used to hunt squirrels on the Wood ranch in the spring and summer. I lived in Susanville for about 35 years before moving to Oregon for my health.

Ed, I've seen several deer taken within 200 yards of the trailhead, maybe you can walk just a bit and wait for someone to scare one to you.

One thing I'm thinking of doing this year is buy a cheap bicycle to take up there. Thrift shops have tons of bikes.

Don't let that stop you. I used to manage a ranch in Norther California and I did well on Black Tail by heading up a ranch road and taking a stand just sitting on the side of the road with no vehicle visible. I would go out about 3:00 pm and after about an hour of letting things quiet down the deer would start appearing. My shots were 150 to 200 yards. Just sit still and have your shooting sticks ready.

Bear 45/70,

Your right, you really dont need that big of a machine.
A 400cc will do the job easily.
I just really wanted that model because it was a one year limited
edition(Outdoorsman Edition 700)probably will keep it 20 years.
It came as a Special Value Package--- with a Warn HD 3500lb winch/Cycle Country snow plow package/special yamaha gold snow, ice chains/5 year transferable warranty/Yamaha dump cart/Yamaha cover/camo helmet etc.
Once you have power steering you would want it,its great.Wife,Daughter also love it.
My driveway is 300ft and that thing clears it like in 5 mins(really)(down,back,down,back--done)also I have over 5 miles of log roads
to keep up so it works well for that.It also allows me to keep an eye
on possible timber theft.(Colt Hbar mounted on front lobster claws) :D But really a 400cc machine would do a great job.
(Its just kinda like having a 45-70 instead of a 30-30 :D :D )but I love the
30-30 also.
See ya

Yep, I did most of my hunting around Alturas. I have hunted in most X-Zones but most of it in Zone X-1 a little Northwest of Canby out toward Lookout, North to Tionesta. There are a lot of big Mulies in this area.

You wouldn't happen to be the guy I talked to in Dr. Berthelsen's office in Fall River Mills about two years ago or so who had been a gunsmith and who had lived in Susanville at one time would you? If you are, you were a gunsmith teacher and we talked about guns and then how the prison that they built in Susanville had a negative effect on the area.

Hi Ed,
No, I've never been in his office. You may be refering to one of the Lassen College instructers. Bob Dunlap was the head instructor for many years. I think he lives I Oregon now. Another instructor's name was John something.
I graduated from Lassen in 1955. All my work was in San Diego.

Oh, Ok. The fellow had been an instructor at Lassen College and had moved to Oregon. I lived in San Diego for many years while I was in the Navy and then while I worked for SDG&E. What shop did you work out of or did you have your own business?

Oh, it just hit me. I think it may very well have been Bob Dunlap because I asked him if he knew a guy here in Alturas named Dunlap.

Hi Ed, your not going to believe this. I worked for San Diego Gas and Electric at Station B from 1955 to 1958. I worked part time at Tommy Morgan's Sporting Goods from 1954 to 1958, and then full time at Krasnes Gunshop on El Cajon Blvd at 54th St. I also worked part time from 1959 to 1963 for Andy Anderson in his bluing and plating shop on University Ave. I left the gun business in 1963.
Bob Dunlap did move to Oregon. He may still be here now. I think the other instructor's name was John Delapp, not sure though.

WOW!! That's cool. I worked at Station A as a mechanic in the heavy duty diesel garage there and sometimes at Garage 2 two blocks up 10th Street from Station A. The last I knew, Krasnes is now on 6th Street in Downtown San Diego. I bought a lot of guns through that shop.

Jerry Krasne was my boss. He started the gunshop at 54th, but his dad owned the clothing store downtown on 6th. Jerry's lair was the basement with the guns. I was hired by his ex-partner to be the 'smith at the 54th st. location. If Jerry is still alive he would be in his 80's now.
I was a night watchman briefly at Sta. A when I got out of the Navy, before going to work at Sta. B in the gang, and later I went into electric production as a plant operator.

What's wrong with the picture El Chivo? If you're saying it has some type of sexual conotaion, that would place you in the kinky corner. It's just a picture of two fat gals and it's not nice to discriminate against fat people.

On the "plus" side of the picture, that's a Ford truck they're sitting on and the "tail-gate" is holding fast without collapsing which just reinforces the saying:

"Ford Tough"
