Hobie's temptation or Hobie's eye candy or one pretty B86 SR

Post by 1886 »

I had a tough time titling this post but given Hobie's affinity for the B-86 SRC, the title seems appropriate enough. I some how won the CCH job auction that Mike Hunter of Hunter Restorations generously donated to the forum. I say some how because I NEVER win anything. I wish the pics. were better but take my word for it, the rifle is pretty. The action is a little stiff but Mike says this is normal after a CCH job. The only complaint is with Browning/Miroku not Mike. It seems the various action screws were real tight and the rear most barrel band screw was no exception. The screw was so tight that it dimpled the inside of the band. While removing the band, it scratched the finish in the forearm wood just forward of the screw hole. The scratch is in the finish only, not the wood. If anyone has a cure for repairing this eye sore, please advise. The entire job took less than two weeks including shipping time. I found Mike to be friendly and quick to respond to my MANY questions. I warned Mike that I am a pain but he took the project anyway. Please consider Mike if you are pondering such work or a restoration project. His web page can be found on the forum's main page under leveraction gunsmiths. I hope you like her Hobie. Regards, 1886.

Now that is truly an extremely nice Browning 86! Love the traditional look with case colors! Try some Snake Oil or Minn Wax paste on that marr, and see if that wont shine it up a bit.

Wow, he got a ton of color on the lever. That's tough I believe.

What happened with the B-86 SRC auction you were watching some time ago? If memory serves me, it looked very similar. 1886.

Somebody else on the board spent the money. So far as I know they still have it. At least they haven't dangled it in front of me... yet.

When the BR. 86's were introduced, the first ones were delivered in 1986. I got the long gun after a 1 year wait and some money tied up on deposit, paid $479.00. I believe it was 1989 that I got the SRC, NIB too, paid $675.00. Seems cheap now. But I would hand over both those rifles for a color job such as you have here, really beautiful. I probably couldn't afford it though!!

1886, well I’m glad you like it… or at least I hope you do :)
Since I don’t do a whole lot of work on the repo 1886’s, it was somewhat of a learning experience for me.

Couple of things I will share with the forum:
Barrel threads are epoxied in , took me about an hour of trying to unscrew the barrel to figure that out, :x so apply a little heat to the receiver ring.

Magazine tube is threaded in.

When reassembling the lever to the bolt, in addition to pushing the ejector in, the firing pin also needs to be depressed; otherwise the pin won’t go in, which is different from a Winchester 1886.

Browning used a lot of spring pins, which I personally dislike. Think I replace a couple with solid pins.

Replacing the hammer spring is easy once you make a tool to do it. Completely assemble the tang assemblies, put the top of the pin into the hammer , use a tool to compress and push the hammer spring into place. I Made a tool out of brass rod, cut a little detent in one end using a 3/8 ball end mill, this holds the radiused end of the hammer strut as you compress the spring and put it in place.

Hey pal !! Don't put words in my mouth. I haven't posted in this thread until now and only now to tell you not to speak for me. You have no idea how or what I think of the rifle in this thread.

I think that overall, the rifle in this thread is a nice looking gun. 1886 has a nice looking rifle and the smith that put it all together did a nice job.
