Sometimes you get lucky!
Got lucky yesterday.
Was shooting with a friend yesterday and he brought a friend of his with a gun asking me if I wanted to buy it.
The guy said its action was broke and he wanted to get rid of it.
I opened up the old gun case and I almost fell on the ground.
It was a old savage 1899B The wood is really nice and the metal
looked in good shape but was really oily/dirty all cruded up.
The action was not working right.sticking/locking up?
He said he needed $325 cash for it.I found out later he plays the slots at the casino by us.it was is great uncles gun but he did not seem to even remotely care of that fact.My friend is frugal and only
really likes varmit barreled .223 Remington 700s(he has 4)
Anyway I went to the metro pulled out $325 and bought it.
I tore it apart last night and it was completely loaded up with dirt/fouling.Totally cleaned the gun,put it back together and its perfect.
Found out today it was made in 1906
It has a 24" octagon barrel and is in 303 savage.I love it.
Anyway my friend called an hour ago and said Tony won $1450 last night at the slots.(so he was estatic)for now at least????

Congratulations Madman4570! Since the guy was going to sell it to feed the Casino anyway I'm glad someone got it who can properly appreciate a fine old Levergun. I would love to see a pic of it, Those old Savages are class from another time and place.

Re: Sometimes you get lucky!
OK Dudes, check this out!!!!!!!(It only happens to me!!!)
I had a feeling this was a TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE DEAL!
Tony(Guy who sold me the gun) showed up at 2pm today with his 18 year old boy(Jamie)
Well must be my buddy talked to Tony(at least what I am thinking)
and told Tony I fixed(I really only tore apart and cleaned it etc.)the gun.)but I did spend 3-4 hrs on it.
Well now-- Jamie really wants this gun back!Jamie told me he wants it to remember the family by and he is going in the Marine Corps( he graduates High School June 5) and leaves for basic August 2)
Tony said he would give me $375 because I fixed the Gun.
I almost felt they were taking advantage of me,but then I thought
about all our veterans serving now and before.I said to Tony,ya you can have the gun back for what I paid $325,but I want you to give Jamie the money and this gun will be signed over to Jamie,(Thats what I did)Jamie was holding that gun working the action smiling.
I told him always keep your guns. You will have this to come back to as I looked over at Tony and said RIGHT.(I told Tony which I really dont even know,if I find out you sold this gun on him I am going to look you up if you know what I mean.He looked like maybe he might stuff his pants and said,ok-I know
Anyway I gave Jamie free a nice Doskocil hard shell gun case and told him take care of that baby its priceless.(I also said that old case
looks like it is an antique so get it and dont sell it(Real old leather).
I get a lump in my throat just thinking that boy might get killed soon and that was the right thing to do.I am glad I did that!!!

Re: Sometimes you get lucky!
Guys and vets are just like anybody else when it comes to trading/selling guns. They don't deserve a break just because they are on active duty/reserve duty or have served in the past.
As far as having a lump in your throat thinking the kid could get killed, you'd be justified having a lump in your throat knowing that if something happens to the boy his Dad will get the gun.
If yer happy then you must have done the right thing. And how you feel in your mind and heart are all that matters. Good job.

ya, I feel like I made a friend with that young man getting ready
to go off and serve our Country. The father?????????
If that gives that boy even one time while he is over there somthing good to think about and will be waiting for him back here is was worth it.
So ya I feel lucky!

Re: Sometimes you get lucky!
It just hit me!!!!!!
You should have told the kid that you'd keep the gun until he came back from being deployed so that you could take care of the gun while he was gone and that as soon as he came back, you'd give the gun to him along with the case. At least that would have kept it out of Dad's hands.
Anyway, once again -- good job.

Good Karma is right. You did it for the right reasons no matter what happens now. That's really all that matters. You're a good man Charlie Brown.

Re: Sometimes you get lucky!
It really means a lot to me with your guys support on this.
All you guys on this forum are good people, and I know all of you would have done the same thing. It was just the right thing to do.
In fact now that I have free time,I thought I would volunteer some of that time to our neighborhood community Veterans Outreach Program, and the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program. (DVOP)
Anyway I really like this forum and the people on it.
I have learned so much from so many of you(and believe me I have a lot to learn)and I feel that there is really a friendship bond with you guys.So thanks for putting up with me and everyone have a great one!!
Sincerely---Madman
