I read recently in one of my gun mags that Liberty brand was rated tops and is made here in the U.S. I've had this brand for several years now , and so far no problems , except one. Wish I had bought the bigger one. :( Do a search on this and they have a fairly good web site to read . I like the tumbler type and not anything electronic.
Mine is a deep wine color and is holding a bunch of rifles , hand guns , and ammo . Plus important papers . About 1000$ out the door. Bought local and paid two folks to load and unload . The company is also great to deal with . Quick to answer any questions. Many different sizes and the insides can be arranged the way you need.

Hope this helps............ Mutt

Mutt is right on the money--for 1-G, a Liberty is hard to beat. My buddy Tom, who owns Targetmaster is the top seller on the East Coast for Remington safes, and they are made by Liberty. Most of his sell for between 800 - 1200-----------Sixgun http://www.targetmaster.com

All specifications for Liberty/Remington safes are on his website

I'm not familiar with "Mutual" - but for under $1K (well under), you might want to visit a national chain store's websites - like Wal-Mart, Lowe's, or Sam's Club.

I saw a fair quality safe at a couple of them, on display last week for +/- $600 up, IIRC.

First, always buy more safe than you need. Fun to fill them!

I picked up a "Champion" safe a few years back. I wanted the largest safe I could find, reasonably priced, and didn't care about a fancy exterior, as it is hidden. I did want it to be fire resistant. The Champion fit the bill wonderfully. However, at 1300 pounds empty, it took six guys to get it in the house!

Whatever you decide on just make sure it's fireproof. Statistically, you are more likely to loose them to a fire than a thief.

Got two of em.
Granite safe sold by Sams Club(has the Winchester logo) on it $535(on sale)540lbs empty (Electronic)Legend 21 Also check Kmart got a Brinks Executive(mechanical) for $275 on special.that is also one heck of a nice safe for the dollar, its unreal.Look them over good though they had 2 different models same $$$ I liked the mechanical
one it was bigger and weighed 70lbs more.
400lbs+ empty*load the bottom with 4 or 5 thousand rounds(500rd tins from china for my SKSs)and 20 or so long guns and no one is moving that sucker easily also.

Grab a couple of friends and get it yourself.(save your money)
If you have a 2 story house put it upstairs in a spare bedroom.
Buy a sheet of 3/4" 5 ply exterior plywood cut (2) 3x3 foot sections out of it,put them on top of each other inside the room on the outer corner wall set safe on them and fill er up! (no moisture problems)
I wouldnt have one in a basement but that is just me!

Or in the garage either. Driving a warm, wet car into your garage lets several pints of water, in vapor, floating around in the air. Also, a garage is the best place for a thief to roll your safe unto the bed of his truck and drive off.

The garage is not a bright idea for obvious reasons and if, and only if, you have a dry basement, thats the best place. Harder to get to and if the house does burn, well, heat rises. Mine weigh a thou. apiece and they are there for life.-----Sixgun

Thanks for your thoughts gents. I am still pondering a selection. My current and now overflowing safe is a Sportsmans I bought back in the '80s. Never had a bit of problems with it except when wanting to move it and I guess that is a good thing. They are a bit pricier than I had planned but if I amortize the difference over as many years as I'll have it "till death do us part" probably not really much of a consideration.

I got a good deal on a Prostaff Sentry safe a little over a year ago. $900 delivered cross country and even delivered indoors to a back room and put up onto an 8 inch riser. We had to take off two doors, but they got it in. That free indoor delivery and setup was a good deal. It also has the door water seal in case the river nearby comes up or if they dump a lot of water onto the house in a fire. The only thing I dislike is that the combo lock is sticky depending on the temperature. I've learned to spin the numbers and then jiggle it over the last number to get it to unlock. That sucks and I need to get it serviced. Everything else about the safe is very good.

I don't have a basement, but if I did, I wouldn't put a gun safe there. The house catches on fire and the fire department dumps water on it and floods the basement. Or else the freak accident of a pipe breaking or freezing and where does the water go? In the basement.
