You could try Elmer Keith's load of 18.5gr of 2400 behind that 250gr bullet.

txpete,
Seems like I only have three loads that I use anymore in all my 45's is 296, 2400, and unique .Although I really like the first two it also seems that I have migrated to mostly unique w/ 250 swc cast pb bullets in 10 or 11 gr. amounts. The 10 gr load velocity w/ 250 cast is right at 1000 fps and 11 gr. is right at 1100 fps w/ 250 cast both w/ pistol length barrels. In my trapper 16" or 1894's 20" barrel it will be substantially more velocity. I firmly believe that at any reasonable range w/ proper placement that I'll have guaranteed results

My twenty grain loads of #2400 push my 257 grain Keith out of my Trapper at 1570 fps. The ones with twenty two grains recoil a bit more than I like, but I haven't chroned them, sorry.

No leading with either and they both shoot better than I can.

+1 to Joe's 2400 load. It is nice shooting and has plenty of umph out to just a touch past 100 yards.

22 gr 296 with a 300 gr. Can't think of the 250 gr load offhand but if I recall I'd chime in again

txpete, June of 2008 I loaded some 255 grain cast swc bullets with 8.0 grain of Unique and ran them through my Rossi 92 20'' carbine. I shot them over my friends chronograph. We got an average of 1069fps, 43.4 ES, and 16.8 SD. We shot some through my Colt SAA 5 1/2" at 818 fps and from his 4 3/4" Blackhawk at 803fps. Unique is all that I load for .45 and .44 special.

For general lead bullet loads I size them .454". For the heavier +P types they usually come presized to .452" and seem to work OK.

Both my lever .45s seem to like the .454" size better.

I have a old ideal #452423 that I size .452 for the bisley and going to try it out in the 94.I am getting 245 grs with my alloy and its the most accurate bullet to date in the ruger.I am going to try some 2400 first and see how it groups on paper with the winny.
thanks for all the info guys.
