OT-Rare old photo man with Large Frame Colt Lighting rifle.
You don't see many old cabinet Photos of a man with a large frame Colt Lighting rifle, or for that matter any Colt Lighting rifle. Looks like he also has a small bowie and whiskey flask.

That is a great photo. And clear too. Those shell look to be 45-70s or something similar, I wonder what it would be like to shoot a pump rifle in that large of a caliber.

He's all dressed up - must be his daughter's wedding day.
Very cool rifle.
Something like that in .357 would be slick.

I'm sure that flask is for medicinal purposes only . . . you know, snakebite or perhaps the hair of the dog . . .

The entire getup is probably the studio's props. Most photographic studios of the last 20 yrs of the 19th C had lots of various prop material and background screens.
I sold my .40-60 Colt Lightning a few years back. The .40-60 in the Colt and the Marlin was dimensionally the same as the .40-65 WCF. Fun guns to shoot, but must be loaded on the mild side.

To me, the clothes don't seem to match the get up.
I would not wear the knife in that manner, you could not sit down.
I would not wear shirt, tie and sweater.
I would put the flask in a pocket, so it did not fall and break.

To digress for a moment...
Based on the experiences purchasers of the Taurus "Lightnings" I know I would not buy nor recommend you buy the Taurus Thunderbolt. All those I know, about 6, have had nothing but problems with the guns.

Except for me pard, mines been fine since day one. I've heard most complaints from cas shooters who load and empty them as fast as possible all afternoon. While perhaps not as reliable as a win73 they make for a fun and stylish day outdoors employed against varmits and rocks that need killin. That 26'' barrel and super crisp trigger make for a very accurate combo too.

A 'studio' shot for sure and for certain... That knife could do some serious damage, sheathed or not.mescalero1 wrote:To me, the clothes don't seem to match the get up.

And there ain't NO way those cartridges in the belt will fit that rifle...!
Lots of dudes 'had their picture made' by any number of enterprising frontier photographers.
Notice also that the dude's cardigan is buttoned completely, and tucked into the top of his trousers. Knew a few old fellers in my early youth, who still dressed that way; my great grandfather being the one I mostly recall.

The large frame Colts Lightnings were chambered for the same cartridges as the 1876 Winchester. IIRC....
