Indiana newbie........

Post by Jay »

Greetings all..... been around shooting for over 50 years, and still enjoy learning about the pastime. I like lever rifles, and have a few. I like rimfires, and have a few. I like centerfires, and have a few of them too.

Welcome, Fellow Hoosier! Did any of you Indiana boys use a levergun for deer hunting this fall?

.... deer with a lever rifle ? Certainly ! Since the DNR allowed the use of pistol-caliber rifles, I picked up a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in 44 mag last May. I took a small buck at 60 yards, and my son used it to take a 13 pointer at 158 yards. Both deer were DRT. It's nice not having to go out of state any more to hunt deer with a rifle.

I shot two this fall with my 1894 in .357, a button buck and an 8 pt. It was a big change from years of muzzleloading.

Jay;
Welcome aboard. Always great to hear from another Hoosier. It looks like a "Central Indiana Levergunner Association" is needed.

We're in mid-southern Indiana and also took advantage of the rifle season:

Me - .44 Mag Levergun & two does. 8) 8)
13 year old Son - .44 Mag Levergun & his first deer - a 10-point buck! :D

I wouldn't mind having a get-together this spring/summer. There's a new DNR range on the south side of Roush lake near Huntington, that can handle 40 shooters up to 100 yards. Range fees are $4 per day, or $80 per year.

Just a thought........

Well, lets try this........

This link is to a map of the Indiana shooting ranges. Anyone interested in getting together, just post the number of the closest range, and the farthest range you'd go to, and we'll see how things shake out.

Welcome Jay, from a fellow hoosier. I live 30 mi. north of Lafayette. The summer shoot sounds like fun, but I will be in south africa, with my son, on a plains game hunt, the first 2 weeks of July.

Anyone who would miss a day shooting in Indiana just to go on some silly 'plains game hunt' in Africs is just . . .

er . . .

well . . .

GOING TO HAVE A COOL ADVENTURE...! Have fun.

THANKS for the link to the ranges map! As for me, I'm near 14, 15, 16, 33, 42, and 49.

I don't know much about any of the ranges, though, except 49, and I've not been there but heard it is a really nice facility. Used to be in downtown Bloomington (had I think a 300 yard pistol silhouette range though!) but they moved it, & haven't gone since.

My schedule is a 60+ hour work week plus trying to run a small farm and pretend I love four children by raising them, so don't schedule 'South' just on my account.
