Rebarrel???

Post by Andrew »

I had a guy at work ask me today about his Win 94.

He said that it had been in a house fire and had gotten some damage. He goes on to tell me that he had a gunsmith re-blue it and whatnot, but he had some bad accuracy problems with it ever since.

I told him it might have a distorted barrel which would need to be replaced. It is a gun he wants to keep and doesn't mind spending the money to have the work done.

Is there anything else that would reak terror on accuracy after being exposed to exssevive heat? I am no expert and make no claims to be, therefore I am probably overlooking a few things. 8)

Thanks,
Andy

re-barrel it. The heat of the fire probably anealed the barrel, it will now have oscillation problems. Barrels are not overly expensive, check out e-gunparts.com.

Rebarreling is the way to go. However I'd caution him to have the entire gun checked by a gunsmith and verified as safe before continuing to shoot it. Better to be safe than sorry.

What Joe said.
Theres lots of things that could be effected if it got hot enough.

Agreed, I'd definitely not shoot it anymore until it's completely checked out. It may be a total loss, i.e. a wallhanger.

Unless it actually burnt the wood off of it I doubt it got hot enough to weaken the barrel. More like the bore is the problem. Fire dried bores rust easily. If the bore is ok I would look at how it was reassembled. Loose parts hanging from a barrel aint good for accuracy.

He is bringing me the Serial# so I can get some info on year and stuff, I may have him bring me the gun for inspection.

Like I said I am no expert, but, this guy with the problem makes me look like one. :D I might see something he didn't.

Thanks for the help fellas. :D

I saw something interesting the other day on Mic's web site. He says he won't work on a Winchester Ranger. He says they're just too rough to start with.

Andrew, since you are in southern Missouri I would check with forum member colt 1849, a gunsmith and does restorations too.
