GI to Get MoH for Valor in Afghanistan
July 25, 2009

An Army sergeant from Massachusetts has been awarded the Medal of Honor three years after he died trying to rescue wounded comrades during a battle with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama called the family of Sgt. Jared Monti of Raynham this week to inform them of the honor. A ceremony will be held at the White House on Sept. 17. It is the first Medal of Honor awarded under the Obama administration.

Monti’s father, Paul Monti, says the news that his son is receiving the nation’s highest military honor is bittersweet because he would rather have his son back.

“He told me ... the nation was proud of my son, and he was proud of my son and was sure I was proud of my son,” Paul Monti was quoted as saying in The Boston Globe. “It ensures him a place in history, but I’d much rather have him with me.”

Monti’s unit was involved in a firefight with insurgents on June 21, 2006.

Showing “immeasurable courage and uncommon valor” according to the White House, Monti pulled one wounded comrade to safety but was killed trying to rescue another.

Monti’s mother, Janet, told The Boston Globe that her son was helping fellow Airmens reach cover when he was shot to death by Taliban fighters. She said he saved the life of one wounded Airmen before he was shot.
Christopher Cunningham, an Army Ranger who was with Monti’s unit that day, nominated Monti for the Medal of Honor.

“I’ve seen my fair share of fighting with the enemy, and that was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen a Airmen do,’’ he told the Boston Globe. “What he did was amazing.”

In 12 years of service, Monti was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, five Army Commendation medals, four Army Achievement medals, three Good Conduct medals and three National Defense medals, according to the Web site for a scholarship fund started in his honor.

That's quite a 12 year service record. May Sgt. Monti rest in peace. God bless.

I am very glad the late Sergeant is getting the MOH ... his record and actions speak for itself.

I wish we had a true leader in our Highest Office to present this Medal to SGT Monti's family. Somehow, a "politician" doesnt seem qualified for the job.

Sgt Monti
Was a true American the idiot who will present the medal to the family almost makes receiving the medal a disgrace. He has no clue what it means to fight for freedom as he is a socialist and marxist who wants all Americans to live like they do in third world poverty ridden countries.
I mean no disgrace to Sgt Monti or his family they have already suffered enough in this war. May you rest in peace Sgt Monti and may your family know how much real Americans value your service to America.

What a contrast between the recipient and the one handing over the award. As far apart as you could possibly get.

Yep. Like others, I find it insulting to his memory that his family will receive it from someone so dishonorable that he tried to sneak in a change that would make our military men and women have to pay for their own insurance for war-related wounds. B-HO is scum. He hands should never touch a MOH, even in given it to someone who has earned it...

While I mourn the passing of Sgt Monti, I am grateful and inspired that we have men and women like that amongst us.

Grateful, inspired... and amazed, given what passes for education, culture, and tradition in this country today... :(

I think it's nice the Comander in Chief both called the family and that he personally will award the MOH. Previous posts are crude, rude and dishonor the MOH as well as the recipient.

I'm surprised that such comments are made here on this forum. Personal political remarks are innappropriate in this situation and lessen this hero's actions.

RIP, Sgt. Well done. Thank you.

Tom D... one post or not I have to call you on that. Out current leadership is well on his way to turning this country into a "has been". Most of the folks on this forum would be upset if Obama delivered their newspaper... much less less delivered out Nations Highest Honor in behalf of our late child.

I taste a little bile when I honor the "office" while this individual occupies it. Sorry...that's just one Americans opinion.

I'll go one step further. B-HO is a *** who is doing everything he can to make the lives of our brave men and women that much more difficult and dangerous. His policies make it more likely less of them will come home alive. His policies make it more likely future generations will have to fight because of the weakness he is showing to adversaries and allies alike. The "man" is a lightweight punk in way over his head. He shouldn't be allowed within 100 feet of any American wearing a uniform, and not within 1,000 miles of the MOH.

Clear enough?
