OT-Lee Loader 410 Prices

Post by Big Bore 94 »

Why are Lee loaders in 410 selling for such high prices. There is one on an auction site with more than four hours left. So far there has been 14 bids and it is up to $146.99 + $8.00 shipping. Please enlighten me.

The 410Bore guns seem to be another one of those dieing calibers, that just won't die. And it seems, all the shooters who have kept it alive, who have been forsakened by accessory manufacturers, grab up any 410Bore gear they can find.

I'm thinking that someone here on this board got the rights to make those from Lee IIRC.

They must be terribly hard to find and very useful to demand such a price. Amazing.

I have been hunting one forever....have checked a ton of old hardware and gunshops to no avail. The prices are out of sight when you see one on ebay or gunbroker....I have made most everything but can't get the crimper worked out yet....

To me that price is a bit pricey but when ya want one and that's the only way to get it then ya gotta pay to play.

About 6-months ago I bought a LEE Loader in .444 Marlin which of course isn't made anymore. New they cost about $12.00 at the time they were discontinued. The one I bid on on e-bay cost me $46.50 shipping included. Almost 4-times the cost new but well worth it to me since they have been discontinued.

12ga LEE Loaders are alson going up in price too now that they have been discontinued.

I believe that a 410Bore gun is equal, on paper ballistics, to a 44mag. Can you also confirm that? I would imagine, hand rolling, you can probably squeeze a little more out of it?

The patent has lapsed. I don't have the 'rights' any more than anyone else, but I HAVE looked into trying to start making them. (Lee doesn't care.)

Unfortunately, life intervened, but it is still somthing I'd like to do...

I think the factory .410 slugs which were legal for deer in Indiana a few years ago when rifles still were not, were closer to a .32-20 ballistically - something like a 90 grain projectile at 1500 fps or something. Whether those loads were for 'old' guns, or if there is any 'pressure' market-wise to make them as potent as possible, I don't know.

I never tried to chronograph one.

I thought I saw a few years ago an adapter kit of some sort so you could use the Lee "Load-All" for .410 and not just 12 and 20 gauge. Bulkier, but still not too bad, and fairly inexpensive. Probably ok for low volume loading.

Too bad Lee keeps discontinuing the little 'Mallet' kits - they seem inexpensive to make and inventory, and I'm surprised they don't just wait until a they've sold all but a dozen in a given caliber, then make another dozen. They make good 'survival kit' items even though they aren't as easy to use or versatile as the Lee Hand Press or the similar one Pacific used to make, or even the Lyman 310 tool.

I belive $146 is slightly insane when you can buy a single-stage MEC for that price.

It may very well have something to do with the fact that a box of 25 .410 rounds will run you a norm of about $12 - $15 for # 6 or 7 1/2 shot vs a box of 12 ga will run you about $5 - $7 a box for the same thing. MORE MONEY LESS PRODUCT, ONLY IN AMERICA!

You might consider getting some of the reusable brass .410 cases. I hear you can reload those fairly easily without a press.

It's a 'volume' issue - the unit cost goes way down (more than offsetting the materials) for 12 and 20 gauge due to extremely high production due to high demand.
