OT-6-284, 6.5-284?

Post by awp101 »

Has anyone ever messed with these calibers? I was looking around for a bolt action project and ran across something in one of these 2 calibers. Not really a caliber I'm looking for or a stock design I like but the price to get in is attractive and I suspect I could sell the stock and barrel to offset the initial cost.

Any thoughts as I kick the idea around?

I am a 6.5 fan.
Shoot a 6.5-06 I built.
6.5 Swede ( nice )
and a .260 Rem barrel to go on a 722 short action, unless someone cons me out of it.

Thanks, I like the 6.5 Swede as well.

I checked again and it's 6-284. Nothing about Norma though, just 6-284 Winchester but I think they're the same? How hard are these on barrels?

Don't know if I'm trying to talk myself into or out of it.

The .284 Winchester case has the same capacity as the 30-06.
In 6mm it will have a real short barrel life.

Go to 6mmbr.com and find out about it. Barrel life is kind of short if you really load it full power. I have an Encore in 6.5-284 but haven't shot it yet. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would go with the 284win.

I do not have either calibers you mention.I recommend the cal.that falls between the two you reference ie: 25 cal.. I have a 25x284 that is a tack driver. It is built on a LR 98 Mauser action with a 24in Douglas bbl.I use a 75gr Sierra HP on top of 55.7gr 4350 produces 3710 FPS with tack driving accuracy.Deadly on varmits.
53.2gr of IMR 4831 and 117gr Nosler Part. is deadly on deer size game.
I like the 25 cal bore. This cartridge is basiclly a fat 25-06. I had the rifle built long before Remington turned the 25-06 into factory round.
Cases are easy to make. Simply run a 284 case through the 25x284 die and fire form.I think the 284 case has to much volume even with the slower burning powders for the 243 tubes. My humble opinion.

I'm already sold on the .25 cals. My plans are for a .257 Roberts. I think between my .243, the Bob, the Swede, the .308 and -06 I can take anything I will ever have a reasonable chance to hunt in my lifetime. And that's just the bolt actions!

The 6-284 just happened to be on a rifle I wanted for the action and all I knew about it was what I found on ammoguide.com and in Wildcat Cartridges.

I thought it sounded overbored so it's good to find my reasoning is still sound.

That .260 sounds cool. That's one cartridge that's intrested me for some time.
