OT- Home Tanning Kit..?

Post by deerwhacker444 »

I'm planning on taking some coyotes and bobcats this winter and would like to tan a few hides if I get any nice ones to hang on the wall since they're not worth much. Do you folks know of any good kits or methods for home tanning other than salting and scraping? Hides don't need to be super pliable, just cured enough that they won't deteriorate over time.

I've used a solution called "Trapper's Hide Tanning Formula". I suppose it works as advertised, it's not what I would call a true tanning process and wouldn't be suitable for clothing. I would call it a preservative. It works fine for wall hanging purposes.

I don't know, but If my dad was still alive you could ask him, he was pretty good at tanning my hide from time to time :D .

I've used a product called Curetan from VanDyke's Taxidermy. You can look them up on the internet. The key to softening is to work the hide when it becomes (seemingly) dry to "breakdown" the fibers. There is quite a bit of information on tanning hides/pelts on the internet. One place to look is a site called something like "Primitive Technology" as I recall. Good luck!!!

And Merry Christmas to all the forum Members!!! :)

I've used Van Dykes Lutan 100 and McKenzie Tan 5 gallon products and had excellent results with either. Van Dykes Taxidermy (owned by Cabelas) should have them on their web site.

Tandy Leather used to sell a kit for tanning and I believe Dixie Gun Works does ( or used to) as well.

After tanning/drying by any of the methods above, you can make it real pliable by applying Lexall (sp?). You can find it at Western stores or places like Tractor Supply. It actually helps with the tanning process I am told.

You can also tan with Fells Naptha soap. It replicates the brain tanning process. You can find the method by doing an internet search.
