meat
There is a bull elk tag left over up here,
there are two beef cows hanging in the meat locker,
I refuse to shoot that elk,
we do NOT have the freezer space,
Am I right or wrong?

Re: meat
You're right. I've done the same thing before. Just because you have the tag doesn't mean you HAVE to kill something. Good to see someone with self discipline.
Re: meat
you are right but I wouldn't stop hunting

Re: meat
No need to take it if you don't need it.....Now, if you wanted to trophy hunt, maybe you could give a cow to the food bank if you got a real nice wall hanger??? (or not )

Re: meat
If I could be sure that it would be utilized, I would do it.
Re: meat
Well, I enjoy the hunt and every year I donate on or two of my animals to the homeless shelter. Alows me to keep hunting and gives them a great addition to their kitchen.
Re: meat
I agree with your reasoning... however.. Shoot the animal and donate the meat !!!

Re: meat
!!YOU ARE 100% RIGHT!!
In my opinion.
I have two chest freezers on the front porch and an up right in the kitchen,.... all stuffed with home grown goat milk fed beef, pork, baby goat, chicken, and lamb, quail, cottontail,... and catfish when I can get away to get some. Been this way for decades and hence I just don't hunt deer or elk anymore.
Haven't in decades. I just have no need to.

Re: meat
The meat locker is full so there is no reason to fill the tag. BUT, PLAN BETTER NEXT YEAR. In Arizona there are many of us who apply for elk tags each and every year and don't get drawn. It frustrates us to no end when we encounter someone who has a tag and doesn't hunt.

Re: meat
The tag is left over from a block of tags from the ranch down south, you guys have seen me plan this retirement thing, from the beginning.
You REALLY think I would plan that shabbily?

Sorry about that mescalero1, I viewed the situation through my eyes and experience without knowing the entire story. When it comes to your specific situation - I TAKE IT BACK.mescalero1 wrote:The tag is left over from a block of tags from the ranch down south, you guys have seen me plan this retirement thing, from the beginning.

However (and you know this), when tags are in short supply I think each and every person who draws one has an obligation to at least try to fill it. In Arizona, elk is not the trophy, the elk tag is.

Re: meat
Remember I lived in Phoenix for 30 years and could not get drawn for Javelina.
I know it's a shame, to let the tag go unfilled.
But with no more freezer space, it is the right thing to do.
I am not upset with you, that is why I provided the clarification.

Re: meat
In the states that I have hunted, it is against the law to give meat away that has been taken on a game tag with your name on it no matter what the purpose of giving it away is.HATCHETTJACK wrote:im sure you could find someone to put that meat to good use.. there are hungry people everywhere

Re: meat
You are right in doing this. If you could find an old couple that would use the meat that would be great, but you know best in this.

Beef jerky... and lots of it.
Elk is better meat anyhow.
There's more than one way to keep meat.

Re: meat
Good to hear that others do it as well. My freezer is full and I also have 1 either sex whitetail tag left over. I seen several smaller bucks this year but the best was probably an 8 point and the shot wasnt that great of an opportunity. I have several friends that have harvested as much as 6 deer within their family. I have no desire to eat that much deer meat. I had already told the wife after my daughter got her buck that I wouldnt shoot unless it would be a new personal best record. Then I planned to donate the meat to Hunters for the Hungry!

I highly encourage anyone out there that feels they need to harvest a buck and dont want or need the meat to consider the same!

I would give the beef to charity and go elk hunting!

Re: meat
No right/wrong, No harm, no foul - It's just that YMMV.
I think I would have hunted for the Elk, then (if successful) donated some of the beef to a homeless shelter to make room for the venison.
We take more than enough game meat, here, for our extended family - but I also make sure to keep most of my neighbors in good supply, for which they seem grateful (being on fixed incomes for the most part).

Did pretty much the same, except I didn't get licences ( still have enough moose and deer in the freezer to last until next hunting season).
