OT: Ice fishing for Lakers (DAY TWO UPDATE) another photo
Clear and sunny. The blue sky from horizon to horizon over a northern lake. Here's your's truly, the Old Geezer, standing in the door of my friend's shack, with some Lake Trout. After catching our limits, we headed home for an amazing Moose steak supper. Life is great!

We have a stove in there, as well as a two-burner hot plate for cooking. We cooked up some venison sausages and beans for lunch. The shack also has two nice bucket seats from a car for snoozing in while we fish. Each seat has its own hole.bigbore442001 wrote:You should get a small satellite TV for the shanty.

Kirk, it looks like some time off has done you some good, real nice catch. Never fished Huron that far north. We caught a lot of yellow perch ice fishing out from Bay City and Saginaw.Be safe heading home.

Certainly a different part of our great country. I catch macks on Lake Tahoe by mooching with live crawdads in the summertime.
Are whiskey or rum hot toddies required when fishing from inside an ice box? Brrrrr.
All kidding aside, nice catch! I gotta try that someday.

Nath, it is a depth finder/fish locator. It lets you know what is swimming around under the ice and how far down. We were fishing in 126 feet of water. Caught some nice ones today.Nath wrote:I

Nice catch. I'm a fan of lake trout, especially when kippered.
I caught a decent salmon my first trip of the season, but things have been slow ever since. I'm going after lakers and rainbows tomorrow.
It was 21" in length, and I'm guessing about 3-4 lbs.

Re: OT: Went ice fishing for Lake Trout today (photo)
Day Two at the Ice Fishing Shack: The second day, my friend's whole family along with my wife and youngest daughter joined us out on the ice. For lunch, we cooked up a bunch of Lake Trout on the stove in the shack, the smallest ones ..... trout just doesn't taste better than when it is fried up fresh out on the ice. Here's a photo of the whole shebang ... my wife is the middle person in the doorway and my youngest daughter is to the left of her in the doorway (the girl with the red barrett in her hair). My friend's son is holding the first fish of the day, already half frozen, caught by his dad. My daughter tied into the biggest Laker of the trip and lost it as she and my wife were attempting to wrestle it out of the hole. We are heading home today with our limit of six fish, totalling about 20 pounds cleaned.

Re: OT: Ice fishing for Lake Trout today UPDATED another photo
The jack is to help free the runners under the shack from the ice. There is a ice chipper inside to chip along the outside edges of the runners, but the inside edges are not accessible. The shack gets moved around quite a bit, using a four-wheeler, to find the best places to fish.nemhed wrote:Very nice, looks like fun for all! Re: OT: Ice fishing for Lakers (DAY TWO UPDATE) another photo
Glad to see another good trip.
I didn't fare as well this morning. I caught two lakers that were too small to keep, 14-16 inch range. A couple of other guys out fishing iced a 29 incher that must have gone 8 lbs
Do you use tip-ups, or strictly jigging poles?

We were using a flat stick just over a foot long. Most of the time, the bites were very light and quick, so we had to set the hook instantly, otherwise they were gone.

Kirk, that is interesting for you to be in that deep of water so close to shore. Must be a rock shelf that drops off fast! Are the fish near bottom?

Re: OT: Ice fishing for Lakers (DAY TWO UPDATE) another photo
The bottom drops off fairly quickly where we were fishing. We found lots of small Lake Trout right on the bottom, 126 feet down (2 pounders). The bigger Lakers were about 40 to 50 feet down. We didn't discover that until the second day, although I saw lots of them there the first day on the fish finder, but didn't take it seriously, thinking they were little ones also. Once a fish bit, we'd have to haul that line hand over hand, furiously up in order to avoid loosing the fish. Still, we lost a lot on the way up. I also fished from an outside hole on the second day when the shack got a little too crowded. There, when I hooked a Laker, I'd simply start jogging away from the hole, holding onto my stick, and once I got far enough away, the fish would come flipping out the hole onto the ice ..... a lot easier than the hand over hand method.Bigahh wrote:Kirk, that is interesting for you to be in that deep of water so close to shore. Sorry to necro the thread, but I couldn't resist posting a pic of my latest catch
I've been trying to get into some of these for a few years now. Apparently, they get much bigger in the great lakes and northern Canada. The Vermont state record is only 5.5 lbs.

I'm going to adapt them to my dad's seafood chowder recipe.
I haven't decided if I'm going to go out again. I don't have any friends in the area who like to ice fish and it's getting a little labor intensive. I do like burbot fishing since they're meaty and don't require me to get up early.

I didn't mention it, but I hauled one of those Burbot out that same day Lake Trout fishing. It was about 28 inches long. I've got its fillets in the freezer to make a fish chowder soup.
