Before & After 1893 Marlin 38-55
Fellow Guncranks,
Several years ago I snagged this very nice 1893 Marlin takedown in 38-55 made in 1902 with a pristine bore, super wood, in fact it was all in perfect condition but the receiver was browned out. (faded colors) This baby really shot too and has a very tight .378 bore diameter.
Anyway, I needed something to do last month so I stripped the gun to nothing and sent the metal parts to Doug Turnbull for re-case coloring. When you send him the parts, EVERYTHING needs to be stripped down. When I got it back today I needed a memory jog to figure out where all these tiny little pins, springs etc. went. (you know, the things you don't normally take out)
I installed and fitted a new firing pin and spring cover as the pin was broken (it still shot!) and the spring cover losts it's "spring-a-bility, if thats a word.
Buttplate, receiver, hammer, lever, and takedown extension all got the treatment.
Yep, it will be at the first levergun silhouette match next month and at the Pa. State Champs in Sept. ----------Sixgun

Beautiful rifle ... plus it's a shooter. That's fantastic. I need to get a Marlin takedown some day just to learn how they work.

That's a beauty and will be extra enjoyable to shoot.

I don't know Sixgun , that gun is kind of flashy for you. Or were you one of the guys that always had the COOL car .
What kind of accessories does one wear to a shooting event , to be as styling as that gun. That just seems to add alot of stress to the event . You don't want to be caught in public with the wrong belt that doesn't match that gun. You better just sent me that gun and I sent you one back that isn't as flashy so you can blend in with the crowd. Instead of the "look at me look at me " gun.
I'm just trying to help!

very nice color-hardening job. Lots of those old Marlins had colorhardened receivers. Yours kind of reminds me of my late Dad's old 1936, as it must have looked when he bought it brand new. Wow!

JACK!!!
What in heaven's name were you THINKING? You took one pristine, immaculate, 1902 collector grade mdl 1893 Marlin and turned it into a ... .... .... .... SAFE QUEEN!????
How dare you? That baby is far to beautiful to take to the range... let alone SHOOT! Why even as a safe queen it's suffer from possible wear and contamination when coming into contact with human skin... I just know that you won't be able to keep your hand off it! And if you venture out to the range with that beauty... others will paw at it like cats at the scratchin' post. (Phew, almost got myself in trouble there!)
You ARE going to be the envy of all that lay their eyeballs on that fine work. That's moved from firearm to ART! Oh, did I mention that I'm jealous?

Re: Before & After 1893 Marlin 38-55
Very nice, Sixgun. I would've left the gun as-is, though, so I wouldn't feel bad about draggin' it through the brush like I knew I would.

A+ job Jack. If yer like me, you'll end up using that rifle for hunting, range work, and just plain wall hanging. Use the heck out of it. I shoot everything I have no matter how nice.
Nice looking rifle. USE IT!!!

Ben, In a way yes, I had a very cool car. I drove a 1968 RS/SS Camaro with the 300 HP 350 I sold it in 1974 for $750BenT wrote:I don't know Sixgun , that gun is kind of flashy for you. Or were you one of the guys that always had the COOL car .

Re: Before & After 1893 Marlin 38-55
Thanks very much all of you fine shootists. As for Griff and Modec Ed, YES, this baby is going to be shot and shot A LOT . I already have 2,000+ rounds out of it with another 1500 to be pushed down the barrel this year alone.
And yes, I gave it lots of thought before I had this done as about 90% of my leverguns are decent shooter grade (between 50 and 85%) I would never do this to an '86 Winchester as that would be breaking the "cardinal rule" on collecting, but hey, its only a Marlin.
In Pa. I am known as the guy who shoots the original rifles at matches and I want to throw the boys off with this one--I'll tell 'em its a 100% condition rifle that came out of the Marlin museum and watch their faces when I start blasting with it ------yea, by the end of the day, I'll tell 'em the truth.
I like to laugh and have a good time and on the same note, remain responsible------but.........this "responsible" thing is gettin' old, like me! --------------------Sixgun

See you are a trend setter , because not just anybody can pull off that look.
Re: Before & After 1893 Marlin 38-55
Sixgun, this is way out of character for you, but I just gotta know....
Is this one going to be hung up on wrapped 20 penny nails??
VERY nice gun!
