OT (or not) - Ain't gunshop rumors fun?
The latest, well, we all know that the People's Republic of China has been buying up lead and copper and cement as part of their massive modernization/industralization and production of goods (particularly with lead paint) for the U.S. Now, it seems according to the rumor, that the Chinese are buying up all the "quality steel" so that there is no steel for the production of firearms here in the U.S....
Have you heard any good gunshop rumors lately? Care to share?

Robert the Blackfoot Indian won the jackpot on the fishing trip again! But that is no rumor it is true. He is crippled in one arm and one leg and ties hooks on withone hand and holds them in his teeth. He has shot antelope and wild pig and uses a Savage 99 he loads to 30-30 level.

I find that the more non firearm outdoor gear the store contains, the more welcoming it is. An even ratio of fishing gear to shooting gear makes a friendlier store.Rebel1972 wrote:JasonW ,I posted nearly the same subject on the old forum a couple years ago. They do seem very cliqueish don't they.
I often get the "why are you taking up space in my store?" vibe.

Not a rumor. They were bought up by Remington. It was discussed a while back.Grizzly Adams wrote:Heard one yesterday. It seems that Marlin has been sold. Anyone else heard that one?
Now a rumor would be that they're making a "Nylon 336" ala the Nylon 66 .22 semi-auto.

Actually the chinese have been buying all the steel and concrete
they can for the past few years and this has tapered off just recently..
Cost of construction has come down a bit....and with the lull in
residential construction....concrete prices should fall further...
After the chinese finish there factories....they will need the high
grade steel for product....it should even out eventually..

Well, I guess that's a good thing. The implication in the "rumor" was that production of the Marlin would move overseas.BruceB wrote:Not a rumor. They were bought up by Remington. Concrete to China? That's funny...
So...how heavy is a boatload of concrete?
We're supposedly shipping all the gravel, sand, etc over to China? Or do we just send the cement over and let them make the concrete?
Don't they have the natural resources to make that stuff for themselves? They can pirate anything else, why not that?

Rhimfire is pretty close to the truth on the construction materials. The Indians (Punjab) and the Chinese are in a race for industrial development and the Indians are slightly in the lead at the moment.
The price for clean pressure vessel steel has gone up by more than 300% over the last 3yrs. Right now copper is at close to an all time high. They are paying whatever the asking price is.
When someone says all the concrete is going over seas they don't mean literally pieces of sidewalk. They are talking about Portland cement. This is manufactured with a high heat process similar to the manufacture of coke for making steel.
Currently the Chinese and Indians are consuming a little more that 70% of the portland cement production worldwide. The estimates are somewhere around 5 BILLION cubic yards of concrete used annually by just those two countries. Thats enough to give almost everybody on this planet their own set of concrete sneakers.

Instead of shipping concrete, why not just make a ship out of concrete and float it over there. Then they can break it up when it gets there.
When I was a kid I started digging a tunnel to China, imagine if I had finished it, I'd be rich. I'd have the shortest direct route for shipping steel ingots. And it would be no transporting, just drop them through.
