Waste of a good levergun

Post by Thunder50 »

Talking to a retired LEO at the local gun store and he told me of an attempted suicide, many, many years ago.

Seems like this person took out the gun they inherited from their Grandfather, and tried to end it all. (Gets worse!!)

Seems like they also took the box of ammo that Grandpa had bought with the gun, a 3 digit s/n 1892 Win, in 32-20, that was in 90-95% condition (the LEO also worked in a gun store after retiring, and saw the gun). They loaded the gun and fired into their sternum. By the time they were done, they had a full magazine tube of 80+ yr old black powder ammo rounds in their chest. All the bases of the bullets were sticking out of the skin.

They survived

The gun still sits in an evidence locker

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Man, it would be nice if they'd let a gunsmith 'examine' the rifle, and take some 'samples' or whatever their police ballistics guys want, then CLEAN it.

Tell them the rifling will only 'match' the bullets until it's rusted away from lack of cleaning - maybe that will motivate them.

It's a shame about the gun as well as the person who felt his life was so bad as to take an early out.

It is said that suicide is painless,
but some planning and logic is required.

If you clean an item in evidence it is no longer in the same condition if the DEFENSE wants to test the gun. Evidence must be preserved in the state recovered until there is no longer a possibility of an appeal. In most cases this is forever. I have a Colt Python that hasn't been out of the evidence bag in 20 years, as it is a capitol case it will stay there till the fellow dies in prison.
