PICS OF New-to-me 1895 .405 takedown

Post by crs »

The rifle, 5 boxes of Hornady 300 gr JFP ammo, and reloading dies arrived today and all things are as represented by the seller. The rifle looks NIB except for the Limb Saver recoil pad and Williams receiver sight. It is a Beauty and ready to go hunting! I will add Pics tomorrow, and I am really eager to take this baby to blast something BIG!

Note sharp checkering, good wood and metal (no scratches), receiver sight, recoil pad - all I need except maybe a barrel band to hook up a sling.

"in the shoulder" to me is no worse than most 12 gauge shotguns; even off the sighting bench is no big deal; i think a lot of people are just saying what they have heard and haven't really tried one. i have been slammed a lot worse by a very light weight 308 [remington 7 kevlar stock weighing 5 and 3/4 pounds with scope: miserable! ]

I have one of the new WIN 1895 TD in 405 also. It shoots really good with the factory FP ammo but doesn't care much for the factory spire point ammo. I put a decelerator recoil pad and a williams receiver sight on it. The receiver sight required me to put a higher front sight on it. I have the manual for mine if you don't have one. I could scan it in and email it to you or burn off copies and mail it to you. Haven't tried reloads yet as I got a good deal on a bunch of factory ammo but I have all the supplies to load for it. Let me know if I can help.

Nath;
I have shot a friends 1895 .405 without a recoil pad from the bench with hot 300 handloads at about 2250 -2300 fps and with a shoulder recoil pad it was no problem. Shooting in the field wearing a light jacket, the shooter should not feel a thing - much like a 12 ga shotgun. In fact, my 12 ga turkey gun with 3 inch magnums kicks harder from the bench than any of my rifles!

SFRanger = I have only the standard 1895 Winchester manual and that does not cover the takedown feature. I plan to call Winchester customer support and ask for the takedown manual. This worked for my 1886 takedown.If that is not successful, I will get back to you and take you up on your kind offer.

crs,
What're you doin' Monday. I'm thinking of going to the range. I sat around all day here watching TV and never did get out. Will have some new, "hi-tech" loads for my Sharps. Wanna print them on paper.

You need to stop getting more guns. You will end up filling your safe and my refugee guns will have no temporary home.

Griff - Monday looks OK now, but lets check the weather so we do not freeze our ba## off. Also, you can blast a few .405s anif I can blast a few through your Sharps. I will also bring my 1886 to finish adjusting the barrel sight.

86er;
Still room in the second safe(the one that you did not see) and both my kids safes are not even 1/2 full.

OS - 10-4 on blasting something!!!

mmm, good idea - cast bullets should make practice less costly.

NOTE - Pics added to original message.

Another great looking .405, Charles. How about a couple of photos of the takedown and Deluxe .405s together?

What a peach :D When I said "whats it like in the shoulder" I did not mean recoil, I meant how does it sit on a target off hand :roll: ?

95s have always been my Favorite. That one sure is sharp!

I had a 30s vintage takedown in 30-06. Traded it for a 95 Russian Musket with the bayonette that I still have.

Love to bag one like that!

I found shooting my 1895 .405 very tolerable with the issue butt, and only used a leather slip-on recoil pad during Summer practice, when I was wearing a thin T-shirt instead of thicker Winter hunting clothing.

The take-downfeature is interesting - IMHO, That alone screams for a proper take-down case.

Really nice gun. But those .405's look like howitzer shells!

Nath;
The rifle comes up very well, but I am not yet accustomed to the receiver peep sight. I will let you know more after I shoot it some.

Mod71Alaska:
Good idea, I will do that with a seperate post, as I need a good shot of the elk on the left side of the reciver.

Pets44;
Agreed, the new Cabelas shooters catalog has some decent take down case. Maybe I better take it apart , measure the two parts and then go shopping.

You must be a lucky man to own such a beauty! This gun is one of the best looking 1895 rifles that I have ever seen!!
Impossible to get a 1895 405 Winchester in Switzerland and only heard about a few in whole Europe.

I would lean more toward something like this, than a canvas case w/leather trim:

Ravenman;
Sorry the 1895 .405 is not readily available there in Switzerland, however there were some very nice .405 double guns made in Belgium some years ago. I saw two of them at the Tulsa gunshow 18 months or so back. Both were well made and handled like 28 ga shotguns - nice!

Pete 44:
Very nice leather goods! Now if they were about 1/3 of list price, I mught jump right on that. I still plan to check Cabelas first to check out some of their take down cases, one for the 1895 and one for the 1886.
