Rossi 45 LC in Stainless ............... age help needed !

Post by Harrington-Cook »

Hi Guys

Late I know - but Happy New Year from Berkshire, England, UK !!

........and as always I need advice from the guys that know !!!

I am based in England, UK & have been trying to get me a Marlin in 45LC (to add to my 1894Cowboys in 357 & 44) ......... no chance !

So today I bought a used stainless Rossi - to fill the gap while I'm waiting for the Marlin :D

Between myself & my Ma & Pa - we have 6 MArlins in the 'family' !

Now with my marlins - the serial numbers are easy to convert into dates using the well published info

My Rossi has the serial no SS 000012 - but when I punch that into the lookup on the Rossi website I get a "serial number not found" reply

Have any of you guys got any ideas on how old my "new girl" is ?

Also on the Marlins I usually slip in a Wolff or Lucky 7 Spring kit - is such a thing available for the Rossi - all help & suggestions gratefully received !

Roy

THAT IS THE EARLIEST FIRST ISSUE ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN. IF MEMORY SERVES THEY CAME OUT IN 1998 AS I THINK I GOT MINE THEN AND IT WAS THE FIRST ONE IN THIS STATE [ OF CONFUSION.....]
THE BARREL WAS BAD ON MINE AS IT LOOKED LIKE THE INSIDE OF THE TAILPIPE IN MY TRUCK. I COULD NOT CUT THAT CRUD WITH ANYTHING I TRYED, INCLUDING OVERSIZED BULLETS, SO I SENT IT BACK TO THAT OL' BASTARD HIMSELF SAM CUMMINS AT INTERARMS [INTERARMCO ] WHO HAD IT REBARRELED AND RESTOCKED TOO AS THE WOOD LOOKED LIKE IT WAS CUT OUTTA OLD RAILROAD TIES.
AS IT TURNED OUT THE SS BARREL HAD NEVER BEEN PACIFIED IN IT'S MANUFACTURE AND THE BLACK POWDER LOADS IT HAD BEEN TEST FIRED WITH IN BRAZIL[BRASIL] COATED THE ID OF THE BARREL TO A FARETHEWELL AND THERE IT STAYED LIKE IT WAS WELDED IN PLACE!!! YOU COULD SEE THE RIFLING CLEAR AS GOOD BE THROUGH THAT BLACK COATING THAT SORTA HAD THE APPEARANCE OF THAT BLACK STUFF THEY SPRAY ON THE BEDS OF PICK-UP TRUCKS.
THE NEW BARREL WAS BEAUTIFULLY SHINY AND STILL SHOOTS LIKE A DREAM. IT ALSO HAS NOW AS GOOD A STOCK AND FOREARM AS I EVER SAW ON A ISSUE GRADE ROSSI LEVERGUN.

Hi Terry

Thanks for the response

This one is a pretty (or purdy as you guys say) little thing

Real nice slight tiger stripe to the woodwork & it shoots a single ragged hole at 25m with 5 rounds !!!!

I will try it out to 50 & a 100 at the end of the month

Now bearing in mind I have clearly stated I am a 'Marlin Man' through & through - I really like this gun !!

The killer for me is when the time comes that she needs some fettlin' - as I can take Marlins apart etc in the dark (and carry spares for them too) - but Rossis are a real unknown for me !

All the best

Let me warn you up front that after you get used to that Rossi '92 you will look down your snoot just a bit at your Marlins. I mean no disrespect to the Marlins and I own 'em in every caliber and barrel lengths excepting of the 444MAR chambering.
You will find the rossi '92 to be ever so much smoother, ever so much lighter, and ever so much easier to handle when you want to empty the chamber and not feed another cartridge into the chamber. The '92 was designed by Browning to do this automatically by extracting and ejecting the cartridge and letting the bolt go back into battery wothout lifting a new round into position simply by not pushing the lever all the way to the bottom. You will also notice some other things about the Rossi '92 that'll tickle your fancy, but I'll not ruin the surprise for you
YES, I did keep all my Marlin '94'S in 357MAG and 44MAG and have bought more Marlins but not in any of the pistol length cartridges as the '92 of Rossi, Browning etc is so deelightful as to begger comparison with these short cartridges.

SIX GUNS...! :o :o - Don't tell the 'officials'...!

Here's our "Marlin Family" collection from a recent Thanksgiving dinner of various family members...(we usually gather for the celebration at someone's rural home, and shoot a few targets, get the 'city kids' a chance to handle firearms, and generally have a good time).

But then, there's several of my OWN firearms that I'm sure would give the local constables angina...

I only have two Marlins... a 375 and a 1899 (?) pump. bought the pump many, many years ago to use in CAS, but... alas, they decided I couldn't... so it sits in the safe with a new (unfitted) stock and missing forend. One of my many unfinished projects. Or so sez my wife!

Welcome to the forum. I have two Rossi carbines, .357 and a .45 Colt. By all means get in touch with Steve Young and get his DVD. I bought one and did my .357, the .45 was already slicked when I got it.
We have three other levergunners from England on here too.

My 45colt rossie is like RR 900 of 2000 so what you have doesn't fit in there data base ,because they weren't sure they would catch on here! They thought that 2000 would be a high note. So yours is well an RR #12 would make it
quite collectable if thats the way it works?

Nibe rifle anyway.

Rossi did two runs of the stainless guns to start. The first run was supposed to be a limited run of 2000. Serial number were something like SS 12 of 2000. This was about 1995-96. The next run was about 1998-99 and it was these SS 0000XX number guns that continue today. They did evenetually drop the SS prefix.

WOW !

That is sure some family line up - I have sent your picture to my folks (and some friends !) over here in England - I am VERY envious !

I love my leverguns & also shoot a Ruger Old Army Revolver - which is a close as I can get to my pistol days (pre 1997) when they took all our pistols off of us - I had thirteen pistols including a Broomhandle Mauser & a Luger alongside my Python/Ruger/Uberti Cattleman/Glock/Smith & Wesson 44Mag 8 3/8" barrel etc etc I recently added a Sabre Defence AR15 - as I fancied something a little different - but unlike your semis - ours are straight pull single shot due to the law - GRRRRRRR ! :?

Nate (Steve) - thanks for the heads up too on the numbers - I guess this looks like a 1999/2000 gun from what you & some of the other guys have suggested ..................... and yes - I'll be in touch shortly about getting a spring kit & some tune up goodies from you

I have folks in Mason Ohio & usually pick up my 'purchases' when we come to visit - but the next planned visit is Thanksgiving & I'm not sure I can wait that long :o :D

Thanks for all your help guys - I have logged in once in a while & must make sure I log in more often - nice 'atmosphere' here - but I find I usually leave frustrated with both the UKs firearms policy & our pricing !!

To give you an idea - on new Marlin Cowboys (Octag barrel) - the retail price is £1100 (thats about $1600 USD !!!!!!!!!) - a few dealers are selling at around £900 (but that is still £1350 USD) new Rossi's are around £450 (about $670 USD) and that price is just about to go up.

No-one seems to be selling used Marlins in the UK - and if one does come up - theres a loooooong queue of guys waiting to buy it !

I just missed a little ported 357 that had around a 16 1/2" barrel - the guy was selling at £385 GBP & I though "I don't need it - I have a 357" - the guy that bought it resold it a month later at £550 GBP !!! ($820 UDS) - but I suppose the difference is - I wouldn't have sold it - mine are keepers !

Both my Marlins were bought as used guns around 10 years back & I wish I had been able to see how it was going to go - as I would have bought everything I wanted as soon as I could & not waited - as Homer says "DOH !"

Keep up the good work guys

Roy

You will come to love that Rossi, I had a SS carbine in .357, only sold it because I could not get the police to give me a variation on my FAC for shooting vermin (foxes mostly).

Now after a long long struggle the police granted me a 30/30 for foxes. The law here is a PITA.
