What caliber do these dimensions match?

Post by awp101 »

I found a barrel blank at Brownell's with the following specs: .306"/.312", 1-22" Twist

Doesn't seem right for a .308, any ideas?

THAT IS A 303 OR A 7.7JAP THAT IS SMALL ON THE BORE AND A NOTCH BIG IN THE GROOVE. IT SHOULD SHOOT JUST FINE, BUT I WONDER WHAT CAUSED THAT BASTARDIZATION OF THE NORMAL SPECS. WITH SPECS LIKE THAT GIVING .006" DEEP RIFLING .312" BULLETS SHOULD SHOOT LIKE A MILLION BUCKS, PARTICULARLY LEAD CAST BULLETS.

Thanks Terry! As you were posting, I found the same blank listed at Track of the Wolf and they're saying .32-20.

No matter what, I don't think it would be smart to chamber it for 7.62x39 since the surplus I have runs .311" IIRC and I think the commercial fodder runs .308, again IIRC.

GEEZ, I NEVER THOUGHT OF 32-20 EITHER !!! THAT 1-22" TWIST IS THE TIP OFF THAT IT IS MEANT AS A PISTOL CARTRIDGE BARREL RATHER THAN A RIFLE BARREL.

I'd say you've got it... .32-20

Rifling grooves are only .003" deep.

Would probably make a right fine 32-40 target rifle.

1-22 twist would be way to slow for a 303 they run right at 1-10 but that would be about the right twist for a 32-40 but the bore would be too tight. It might be a chunk of 32 pistol barrel though.

How about 310 Cadet (Greener)? I don't have the specs in front of me, but it sounds close. I'd have to slug my Martini to measure.

They're all over the map from the .312" range all the way up to .323" or more.

(Mine is .318")
