CA Levergun Hunt Results

Post by 86er »

I had a nice little outing with BSARIDE today. Great guy and a pleasure to guide for. We had a small ranch to ourselves. The weather cooperated and we stalked about a dozen different hogs, some merino rams and a small group of assorted rams. In the end, we decided to get the most meat for the money and targeted some feral pigs that were quite large. A long, careful stalk got us very close to two bruisers. I noticed one had a problem with one back leg so we decided to take that one. Jay made a great shot with his Winchester 94 in 44 Magnum using Grizzly Cartridges 300 grain WFPGC. Jay took advantage of the Grizzly offer where you buy the ammo you want and another quantity is forwarded to the outfitter for your use on the hunt at no additional charge. The bullet entered behind the eye and exited behind the jaw on the opposite side leaving a nickel sized hole. Bang-Flop. The beast weighed in excess of 300 pounds. The rear leg showed that it had been penetrated by a broadhead in the recent past. Nice time and good barbeque! Just before I left Jay presented me with a great new knife and sheath that I will certainly put to good use! Congratulations to Jay on his first big game animal!

Sounds like a good time was had by all, except of course the hog.

Wow, big piggy! There has been a great response to the ammo offer and I appreciate it! I'm glad is worked effectively for Jay - I expect and accept nothing less. Congratulations Jay and "nice shot"!

Just curious.....how much meat did you have to throw away due to the
broadhead injury????
I once had to toss a pheasant as it had gangrene throughout.

Wish I could have been there...looks like a great time.

Good Shootin!!

Don't have alot of time but will answer a couple questions.

Mike, Great ammo. that pig was dead standing after the shot, did not move unless you count fallin over.

Darryl, the arrow was low in the ham and only lost about four inches on the small end.

JReed, Hunt was at Bighorn Canyon Ranch.

Only spent three hours cuttin up two ice chests full of pork last night, no room in the freezer now!

I will post more tonight.

Thanks again Joe.

You must be hungry hunters. I shot a 250 pound boar last spring; the coyotes didn't touch it, the eagles wouldn't come near it, vultures stayed away, crows as well, magpies weren't interested but the flies loved it. Dad and I also find recently dead cows and hunt for pigs at first light. Last summer, in one day, we got seven hogs, ranging from 30 pounders to a 200 pound sow. Half of the pigs were in the hollowed out guts of the cow. I guess wild pigs taste like beef. :o
