Slicking up a Rossi 92 .44 mag?

Post by Joel »

I found this http://marauder.homestead.com/files/Rossitune.htm

Not really interested in a race gun, I just want my .44 to feed smoother with less effort, quit chewing up my brass. Anything listed there I don't need to do if I am not into CAS?

My 92 is an earlier model, no safety, had one of those coins in the side.

Simple. Call Steve at Steve's Gunz (Nate Kiowa Jones here) and ask him for one of his excellent DVDs on how to slick up the action and trigger on your Rossi. In addition, get a steel magazine plug (the yellow plastic one will jam eventually) and his ejector spring. That's all you need to slick up your Rossi. I did it to both of mine and the results are fantastic.

Joel,

I am "into" CAS, but... back before Al Gore invented the internet, I slicked up 2 Rossi's using my own methodology. Later, after there were a few sites devoted to CAS someone asked how to slick up their mdl
'92 Rossi. I wrote down in some detail the steps I took back in the late 1980s to slick up mine. After posting this here newcomer named "Marauder", took me to task. I read thru his methodology and mine... near spittin' images. Just proves there's nothing new under the sun. I didn't develop the slickin' up steps... just followed some friends verbal advice and ignored some others.

Then I found this site and some hombre claimin' to be the "Rossi '92 Expert." And that he is. As COSteve suggests, you can get Nate's DVD and use his instructions, send it to him and have him do it, or you can follow Marauder's instructions.

Frankly, nothing you do will truly make your Rossi '92 a "race gun". Not in the CAS sense of the word. But, nothing in Marauder's or Nate's instructions will lessen or shorten the life of your gun. The 2 Rossi's I originally did and the 3rd since, all function fine, and are truly a joy to function. All three of mine were rather stiff, gritty and "clunky" to begin with... now they cycle fine, feed just about anything with a rounded nose (I try to keep flatnoses in 'em, but with a rounded ogive).

If you have the least bit of hesitancy of doin' it yourself, send it to Nate... as I'm sure others will chime in a attest, he does 1st rate work. Wished he'd of been doin' this work, or better known back when I did mine!

I would buy Steve's dvd in a heartbeat if I weren't so broke. New baby on the way, inbetween jobs, hospital bills and all that. Steve has given me great advice and information, also seams to be a very good guy. When things are back to normal I will probably send him my Rossi to fix, raise the front sight etc.

If I didn't know better, I'd say COSteve works for Nate. But seriously, he is the Rossi specialist. By the way, Nate has not been around lately. Anybody heard from resently?

I was wondering the same thing. His last post was 23 March.

I'm hopefully gonna have a 92 Rossi in .44mag in my hands in 1½ - 2 weeks, anyone know of Steve ships internationally? I've sent mails (weeks ago) but no response.

Nope, I just believe in supporting good suppliers. Nate treated me right and I think its the honorable thing to do to return the favor.

I got a response to an email from him a few weeks ago-response to an inquiry about a replacement plug for the Rossi dorkylawyersafety. When I called the number on his email to place the order, a message recorded by his wife said that he'd recently had surgery and would be out of action for a couple of more weeks. I made that call last week. The message went into no details about the surgery, so via check and snailmail, I ordered his DVD and the plug, and wished him a speedy recovery.

Even though you are broke, order the ejector spring and mag follower. The last 1/4" of resistance when closing the action IS caused by a too stiff an ejector spring. The plastic mag follower WILL eventually fail. Shortening the ejector spring and stretching it will eventually fail to function. If the extractor is hanging up a little as it passes over the cartridge rim you'll need to thin it some to reduce the downward pressure on the brass, not side to side thin, but off the bottom.
Kind regards,
Tycer
