Guys I have been out of the game for some time. When I was last involved with weapons other than Bows and Arrows, Winchester was still in full production, the only comparable alternative was Marlin and stupidly I never bought a Browning '71.
My dillema is that so many of the new available lever guns have makes that seem to be used interchangably.
There is Berreta, Uberti, Chiappa, Puma, etc etc. Some seem to be related. Some seem to have the same parent company but are made in different countries (I think), and qualities are it seems variable. eg are the Italian rifles the ones to seek out or are the Brazilian ones still good value for money.
There may be no simple answer, so sorry in advance. But just when I think I have some handle on it I seem to find some other inconsistancy.
BTW, I am so very very pleased to see Winchester back doing what I fell in love with them for ..... making Rifles. I just thought there would be more excitement around over this event. Are they not meeting the expectations of you well versed Lever Folk???
Wincherster copycat confusion.

The Miroku and FN companies are doing a fine job keeping the Winchester name alive with their gold encrusted and heavilly engraved limited edition re-issues (a little bit of sarcasm intended)crow wrote: BTW, I am so very very pleased to see Winchester back doing what I fell in love with them for ..... making Rifles. Some of the guns are not this way (some of the 92's and 95's come to mind) -- but the new 94's --- who gives a flip -- i personally would rather buy a nice condition AE from the NEw Haven plant secondhand than this limited edition stuff (limited edition usually means "add $500.00 " )

The only winchester i would buy right now is the model 70
made in columbia south carolina...If I want a lever gun I will
buy an older winchester first, then a marlin, and then a uberti or
uberti spin off like cimarron or taylors etc...
I really dont want to buy a japchester
although they are very good quailty....
it says made in japan on the barrel....
well....I might buy one of the john wayne commoratives
but thats about it....

Right now the Rossi's, made in Brazil and imported by LSI, Braztech, etc. have better actions than the current LSI Chiappas made in Italy, especially the Rossis made after 2000 when they got new CNC machines. The Chiappas are pretty but have some internal issues. Steve Young of Steve's Gunz will likely be along and he is the 'Rossi Specialist' who works on them every day. Listen to him as he knows of what he speaks.

The japaneese made winchesters are of good quality, however the 'safety' modifications are a negative. I've never looked at the other copycats.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feed back. Look forward to hearing somethng from Steve.
I will keep an eye on the Winchester stuff just in case something comes along I can't resist like a .348 M71/1886
In the meantime I'm far from disappointed by Marlin options and the other cheaper makes...my best mate has a octagon barreled .357 Rossi and it is a lovely shootin stick and very accurate with the tang sight.
Just glad glad I have two genuine Winnies already in the stable.
