Took in a stray lever action today

Post by olyinaz »

Found this poor thing wandering the streets today so I decided to take it in. Unfired Glenfield Mod. 30A in .30-30, $199.

Wont get a chance to shoot it for a spell but I'm pretty excited about it.

Best,

Looks like it was in a good home before, because somebody took care it it. Musta got loose somehow.

Good thing somebody who cares found it before it got hurt.

That's a fine-looking Marlin. I wonder how it managed to escape from the factory with a slender forearm instead of the clumsy treetrunks that Marlin usually puts on their leverguns. You'll be happy with this one for sure.

Well I agree wholeheartedly and, unusually for a Glenfield, there's no fugly stamped "checkering" on it either. Nor any stupid lawyer safeties. Usually I find these things so phenomenally ugly that no matter the price I just can't stand the thought of taking one home. Same goes for those Sears and Wards versions of Winchester and Marlin lever guns - no matter the price, they're just too ugly! But for some reason the factory showed restraint on this one and I love it exactly as it is. Count myself lucky today.

And by the way, this is EXACTLY what I was talking about in that Rossi thread a week or so ago: Why on Earth would anyone buy one of those Brazillian made Marlin copies when REAL Marlins are available new and used all over the place? Makes no sense to me...

Nice gun! I really like that non-hooded front sight. That gun has "the look".

Looks to be a good honest homely lass.

I prefer a gun like that than one with impressed checkering and such nonsense.

Well done.

I've owned a couple of them just like it. The 30 &30As are outstanding values and usually highly accurate.

Well, sadly first trip to the range was disappointing - I was shooting about 3" at 50 yards with multiple factory loadings off of a bag. I do not know if it was me or the rifle because my aging eyes and iron sights no longer mix well and the trigger pull is just better than horrible but certainly I can usually do better than this. I've got a scope mounted on it now and I'll take a sled with me next time and see if I can get a more solid handle on how she shoots. I certainly hope the rifle is capable of an inch and half or better at fifty yards or I'll have to consider moving it along (might be why I found her in the racks...).
