Call off the Search Parties!
I got back to base late last week after spending the better part of two weeks deep in the bush. We had a most wonderful time ... I got to see some wild country ... and I really enjoyed it.
We were in the mountains of western Mozambique and durn .. it gets cold at night! We ate good - rice, chickens, goats, pigs ... even tried rat-on-a-stick.
We went into some really remote areas .. the kids were afraid of the white people at first. But the folks were friendly and welcomed us.
Things I learned were:
- No matter how much dirt you get off with wet wipes, there is always another layer or two.
- An apple you probably would not eat in the States tastes pretty good.
- Rat on a stick is white meat and tastes like .... rat.
- It gets durn cold in the mountains .. in Africa, Arizona or Canada.
- Wearing the same clothes for 5 days is a bit too much of a good thing. Underwear can get toxic.
- Dirty water can get you cleaner than you were before you used it to wash.
- Hot water removes stuff that you thought you had gotten off but which was hiding under layers of grime.
- People who live in the dirt know how to stay cleaner than us 'civilized' folk do when we live in the dirt.
- Most poor people are quite kind, hospitable and loving.
- When you are 200 miles from the nearest town you can see stars you never knew existed.

Jim,
Thanx for the news; you continue in my prayers. I'll trust ya on the rat. If I ever need to find out on my own, I'll make sure I have either BBQ sauce or "spicy" mustard!

Purty neat stuff Jim.
I'm happy to find out I no longer need to try rat to see what it tastes like.
I'll just believe you...

Mike .. thank you for the prayers. If you have not read it, please let me recommend AFRICAN FRIENDS AND MONEY MATTERS BY DAVID MARANZ. A very thorough work on the cultural differences between Africa and the West on how friends and money and society works.rjohns94 wrote:Jim,

My Rat Recipe:Dave wrote:Looks like you all are having quite an adventure. Good to hear from you. Go ahead an post the rat recipe if you get a chance.
1- fly to a small remote airport
2 - drive to a smaller remote village
3 - walk to the market
4 - look for the guy with all the rats on sticks
5 - after you buy however many you want, take them back to camp and have a local show you how they 'fix' them.

We often joke that one of the measures of a man is his ability to turn any critter into a tasty meal. I sense a huge market for BBQ sauce in that area. Let me know if you want me to send you a case of serious, Memphis, TN, BBQ sauce. It may turn out to be a fine tool to help spread the Word.

Jim, you are a wonderful person and quite blessed......and that quote above has been my experience too. makes a person quite humble when you think about it.
