Just got my new Rossi 92 .38/.357, haven't fired it yet. I tried running several dummy cartridges through the action, all being .38 spl cases with 125-gr truncated cone cast bullets. Almost every time, the rifle ejects the first round, then feeds all the others just fine. Anybody know what causes this and how to correct it? Will .357 cases feed better?
Nice rifle otherwise. I was tickled to see that it was already d&t'd for a tang sight, so that's one thing I won't have to do (I bought a Marble's tang sight for it.) The trigger is fairly crisp but a bit heavy at 5# so will get a trigger job. Love the CCH and 24" octagon barrel--I think this'll make a good rifle for Cowboy PC Silhouettes.
Now I hope to be able to use it w/o having to load 6 rds. fora 5-shot critter bank.
Yes, its because of the 38 Specials - .357 Mags shouldn't do that - but it can be fixed - I think you need to adjust the feeding guides with shims - but I'll let Nate Kiowa Jones or other more 92 knowledgeble member fill you in on this.
Rather than adjusting the rifle, try adjusting the OAL of your handloads. I've found that my two LSI Rossis and my friend's Braztech Rossi all feed long loaded 38spl of about 1.500" OAL as slick as snot.
In fact, I tried a dummy round with a 158grn Zero JSP loaded backwards with an OAL of 1.510" feed sweet.

That is the best place to look first. The 92 was designed around ammo that is about 1.5' OAL. Sorter ammo tend to come out of the tube on to the carrier the bounce forward enough the the rims end up uder the rim slots in the guides and when you work the lever they just get catapulted out.
If longer ammo doesn't cure the problem then you can look at adjusting the guides.
BTW, there are commercial reloaders that offer these long loaded 38's for leveractions.

This is the same advice that Nate gave me about a week ago when I emailed him concerning issues with my own Rossi 357. I proceeded to load some with the Lee 125 gr flatnose cast bullet, crimping into the leading edge of the lube groove, for an OAL of 1.498". Problem solved. The gun feeds like it should, without jamming, and is still minute-of-claybird-fragment accurate at 50 yd. Steve's DVD is worth buying-and he uses a 357 Rossi in showing how he tunes up this model. The gun in his video seems to feed just fine with short loads though. Either that, or his dummies have been loaded long and he forgot to mention it in his DVD.
