Light 45/70 Load info

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Who shoots 45/70 with 300 to 405 gr lead bullets with velocities from 850 to 1000fps. I sorta have a load picked out just curious what some of you guys do.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

14 gr.Trail Boss under a 325-350 cast bullet is very accurate in my .45-70`s and 13 gr under 300gr. cast is very accurate in the .444 Marlin. I believe they run at about 1100 though. I have the chronograph data but it`s out in my shop. Can look tomorrow if you want.

would like to see the velocities, keep forgetting about Trail Boss. Might have to stop on way back and look for some.

I've had real good results with 12-13 gr. of Unique over a 405 cast bullet.

Wouldn't you want the Unique under the bullet  Great minds must think alike, thats load i already was thinking of. Whats your velocity with it? What gun do you shoot it out of?

Ditto. I shoot mine out of a Marlin Guide Gun using a Lee 405 gr. mold. Groups are nice. Originally loaded for my wife, but she doesn't like it too much.

In keeping with the SKS "Whisper" cartridges, where 'heavy-for-caliber bullets are fired at just below mach 1', I've often wondered - - - Does anyone SUPPRESS the .45-70...? It seems like it would be an ideal cartridge for lobbing a 700 grain bullet at 900 fps, like a quiet bowling-ball.

4.0 grains of Red Dot in my High Wall, and you can hear the hammer drop. Great small game load out to 30 or 40 yards while deer hunting. And completely quiet. Some guys on here helped me with that load, and I sure do appreciate it. I also use a round ball as a projectile.

I used some Puf-Lon for filler, but it is extremely dirty. Then I bought some pillow filler(dacron), buy do not use it. I just be sure to lift the rifle up in the air to make sure all powder is sitting back on the primer. I am going to try the dacron in my next loading session. Tom.

Um, yeah. Well you know what I meant anyway.

I shoot them from a Marlin Guide Gun and bullets I cast from the RCBS 45-405-FN gas check mold. Going from memory I think 13.0 gr. gave me about 1100 fps and nice little clusters at 50 yards.

[quote="HEAD0001"]4.0 grains of Red Dot in my High Wall,=quote) That sounds interesting have try that too. Has anyone noticed that WW and RP 45/70 brassis lots more expensive than Starline. Only bad part about Starline is at less than medium to heavy loads it dont seal and get blowby and dirty cases

Hmmm... might have something to use that Trail Boss with after all. I sure never found a .45 Colt revolver load that was worth a darn. Very handy and easy to load but never got any accuracy out of it.

11grs Unique and a 300gr Lasercast. About 1000fps from my Ruger #1 and 1 hole groups at 75 yards. Knocks the snot outta coyotes around the chicken house.

I keep thinking I've seen someone who's done it. If I could just remember where...  :?

3leggedturtle , That Trail boss load I posted about.
325gr. PB bullet , 14 gr. Trail Boss,= 1140fps.

This is a super light shooting load that any 10 year old could shoot all day long and it is very accurate.

13 gr. TB under 285 gr.PB bullet gave 1135 in my .444 and is also super accurate. Have fun! :D

13.5 gr of Unique under either a 400 gr or 350 gr cast bullet.

12 gr of Unique under a Lyman 525 gr Postell bullet.

Incredibly accurate.

Thats the one to use with any weight bullet in a 45-70. Much more than 11 grains and you will be breaking the sound barrier, along with decreased accuracy. You might get away with 12 grains.

Thats the first load I shoot out of any 45-70 rifle before I put time and energy into it. If it don't shoot that load, its junk. :D -------Sixgun
