OT: Blowin' Smoke - .81 Cal @ $200

Post by Pete44ru »

This AM I fell into a .36 Numrich H&A underhammer for $100, and a pre-Seneca T/C .45 w/13/16" x 27" bbl for another $100.

.36 + .45 = .81 ;)

In my state, the .45's legal for deer, but not for small game; the .36 is small game legal, but banned for deer.

That's a nice buggy rifle. They're getting harder to find. I like a .36 much better than a .32. Those little .32 pills are just too hard for my fat fingers to hold on to. Even though it runs afoul of the law in most states a .36 with a Maxi ball will bring home venison.

Always thought those Seneca's were a neat little rifle.

I have been searching high and low for a Seneca and you find one like that. Now I am sad. Someone make me happy and help me find one.

Pretty nice deal you got there. I was going to have a 40cal underhammer made up for me but by the time I had the funds scraped together the fellow I was going to have do it went out of business. :( Real nice deal you got there.

Well done! I especially like that under-hammer. Could I get you to post more pictures and tell us a bit more about it? You see, uh, my son (yeah, that's it) doesn't know anything about that interesting arm and, uh, well he'd like to learn. Ahem...

Fascinating...

My son has the same questions! Post the details, and I'll be sure to update him.

I'd do it myself, but I'm afraid my technical knowledge would obscure the basics...

For anyone that's interested you should be able to find these being made by someone as it's a popular design.

I know little about muzzleloaders and have never even heard of an underhammer, but my guess is the underhammer was designed that way to keep your powder dry :?:. Whatever the reason, it is a neat firearm.

The underhammer guns were popular in the northeast. They were very cheap as there are only two moving parts. The trigger and the hammer. The trigger guard is the mainspring. The cap fired directly into the powder charge for fast ignition, however, you can occasionally get a little bit of powder burn on your forearm if you don't hold it just right. They were inexpensive and usually could be quite accurate. Later ones were built for serious target work, could be easily fitted with sights, and the standard percussion nipple replaced with one that used a centerfire primer held in a cup with a little handle you moved to reload it. They can be fun guns. ATB
