Rust on old levergun
What do you guys use to clean up an old levergun? What do you use or how do you get rid of the surface rust etc that some of these old girls end up with on them?

For light surface corrosion....I've had good luck with a pencil eraser.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Griff has recommended some bronze wool and penetrating oil, which makes sense. I think I would try this first. I have always used the 0000 steel wool pads(very lightly) with Kroil or other penetrating oil and have gotten no ill effects. The key concept is go as lightly as possible. For little clumps of rust, a penny will work as well.

Quad aught steel wool and Hoppes #9 has worked for me.

Good morning
I use the green scrub pads and kerosene for bad active stuff. There is little worry about removing any metal. Kero penetrates well. I have placed parts in a kero bath for long time and that stuff migrates into threads.

I treated a High Standard my FIL had, that he had left under the hood of his truck in a plastic box for several years, with 0000 wool and WD-40. Took off the surface rust and left what was left of the finish intact.

Exacty. I've used that combo on several old, expensive guns and it does an excellent job. I have never been able to detect even the faintest hint of damage to the blue.TedH wrote:Some light gun oil and very fine steel wool to start.
