Marlin 444p reloading question.

Post by win38-55 »

I have a Marlin 444p that I want to do some reloading for. I cannot seem to find the Hornady 265 grain
interlock's any where for a very long time. I have shot Hornady 240 gr XTPs out of it but I am still not very happy
with the XTP's. I do have about 1000 240 gr SWC bevel base cast lead bullets laying around for my 44 Mag.
My question is would this be ok to do in the 444p. And any recipes for doing this would also be appreciated.
Also I would like to load this for deer hunting at close ranges 100 yds and less, any help or info would be appreciated.

I recommend you load a set of dummy rounds and check the feed and function. Some Marlin 444's are picky about the bullet style and others are OAL sensitive. The Hawk 265gr from Mr. Hill is available on his website as is the Swift A-Frame from Mr. Uber.

Another option to consider: the regular old 240 grain JSP's that Remington uses do THIS to a steel gong, so don't underestimate them as "pistol bullets that will just blow up at that velocity"...

These are my cast bullets too, work well out of both my 18.5 Timber Carbine and my 20' Black Shadow with 22.5 grains of H4198. Use 240 grain Speer JSP's with 47 grains of H4198 with great results on Jacketed.

Have not had much luck loading cast bullet in Marlins with Microgrove barrels. In 35 Rem and 45/70 that is, back when I had my 444 I was not into reloading so I don't know about them but I would think they would be the same.

take the above bullet size it .432 for the 444 MG barrel and it will shoot better than jacketed bullets  unless you get a bent barrel marlin

Chub Eastman likes the 250 grain Nosler Partition HG with 50.5 gr of Accurate XMR-2015 and a WLR primer.

Layne Simpson likes the above same bullet with 52 gr of H-322 and a Rem 9 1/2 primer.

Brian Pearce likes the Speer 270 grain Gold Dot bullet backed with 54 gr of H-322.

.............adhere to all the normal reloading procedures and reduce 10%...........

Have fun and shoot straight! :D
