honestly, i doubt that you could pull that off safely. to get there you would need to convert your gun to a 30/30 improved or a 307. then you dont have reliable data.
that said, you might get 2325 or so with the leverevolution 160 grain factory 30/30 loads. It may be possible to handload 2350 to 2400 with 150 grain bullets.

My lee manual lists a maximum load of reloder15 at 2330fps for the 170 gn , so it would depend on whether your rifle can handle a higher pressure SAFELY. I you wanted to try you would have to work your way up very carefully and watch for any pressure signs.
Personally I wouldn't do it, I'd get a bigger gun.

bsp, A velocity of between 2000 and 2150fps with a 170grn bullet is more realistic and safer. That would be using w748 powder.
I run my 307 win at 2400fps with winchester stated loads(170grn bullet). The 307 uses a bit more pressure and more powder, and asking this performance from the standard 30-30 would be pushing well beyond safe limits.

The trick is to rechamber the gun to .30-30 AI...TedH wrote:I'd say not likely to do it safely. That's about all I can squeeze out of a 150 gr. load. Maybe some others know a trick.............
I recommend that if you want a .308 Win, you BUY a .308 Win. 170 gr. at 2200 fps will do just fine whether you believe it or not. Try it.

There is a thread on the Beartooth forum comparing the 16- 20- and 26-inch .30-30’s. Alliant Reloder 15 and Hodgdon Varget will surprise you with their performance but 2,350 fps from a 20 inch barrel is not a reasonable goal.
As a side note the .307 Winchester will exceed 2,450 fps with the 170-grain bullet from the 20â€

I am guessing you may be a Cowboy silhouette shooter. I have done a lot of testing to develope a 170 gr. load that will reliably knock down a 56 lb. ram. Th best powder I found for velosity was R-15.I tested it in a 336A Marlin with a 24" barrel and got 2245 fps. without any signs of pressure. My Winchester 94 with a 26" barrel will turn up 2345 fps. also with no signs of pressure. I would suggest you start around 32.0 grs. and work upwards checking for pressure signs. I am using 34.0 grs. I must say this load will flatten any steel ram. It is also extremely accurate. I doubt you can achive these velositys with a 20" barrel. Also if shilouette rams is your motive, there is a rule change for 2008 that requires the rams to be set back on the stands to make them easier to knock down. cslcAl
