OT - Colt SAA 4 3/4 n 38-40

Post by pwl44m »

This is the Colt I picked up this weekend. Purty little Gun- NIB with a Colt lock , wow. Asking price was 2gs, way too high.Dropped to 1600, still too high. So We worked out a straight trade with no boot either way. I gave Him an Ithaca 600 anib,a Rossi pump 22 that I got a couple weeks ago and a 303 British full dressed- Bubba hadn't got to it. Good deal for Me as I didn't have much in the 3 Guns.
Now I have to figure out what to do with a Gun with such a short puny barrel, LoL The cylinder is supposedly unturned and appears as such.Who wants to be the first to turn it.
It will go nicely with the Win 92 I got this weekend also in 38-40. More about it later.
Are all Colts really shiney or is this one maybe special order ?
The serial # has a prefix and a suffix, so is this still called a 3rd Gen ?

Sounds like a good trade to me!
The SN should begin with an S and end with an A for a third gen. If it is late enough, (last 3 or 4 years) it will have the removable base pin bushing in the cylinder. These are some very good Colts and in maybe the best caliber ever. Many old lawmen used 38-40/38WCF which is really .40 caliber. The 1st gens used the same barrel for .41 Long Colt and the 38-40s are so marked under the head of the base pin. Tiny little 41 on the bottom of the barrel.
While I shoot the 7.5" bbls. best, I have had surgery on both rotator cuffs and now shoot 4.75" because they clear the holsters easier. Besides, I think the short bbls. look better. I know they sell a lot easier than the 7.5 and the 5.5 is usually a slow mover.

@ MM, that is what the Guy I bought the win 38-40 said. That they r really 40 cal. So We got into a discussion about some 41 lead bullets I have (2 500 rnd boxes) If I could use those to load 38-40s. We decided that I couldn't but after reading Ur post about Colt using 41 barrels it renewed My interest to pusue. I'm sure there is enough knowledge here to tell Me Yay or Nay. BTW on the box the bullets r in it says .410 and 38-40 r .400. am I right.
@ Pitchy, I have a 2nd gen Colt 7 1/2" in 44 sp. I like it but it hurts. lol wah huh

Yep! They are made to be shot. The later 3rd gens in 38 WCF that I have all have excellent tolerences with groove diameters at .400 and cylinder throats at .401. Its a perfect match and mine will shoot with the best of 'em.----------Sixgun

My new Colt SAA (2-3 yrs old) had a .401 barrel, and .397-.398 throats. Not a good combination. Had to massage the throats to get them right. May want to check yours.
