OT Son competed in his first Cowboy Match (pic heavy)
Took my 9 year old son to his first match yesterday. He had a great time. We didnt have his shotgun ready by yesterday's match so he went without a shotgun. They let him shoot his rifle at the shotgun targets with the exception of any that threw a clay bird, for obvious reasons. Those clay bird targets were counted as misses. Other than that, he had NO counted misses with pistols or rifle. I knew the boy could shoot but even I was surprised at how well he took to it.
He was using his new Ruger SASS Vaqueros shooting .38spl along with an older Rossi .357 rifle shooting .38spl. The rifle is too long for him and the action is way too rough for him but he made due and hit everything he aimed at. I will be shortening the stock and slicking up the action for him ASAP. That will really help him out. (By the end he was getting tired and the rifle was no help)
Several guys and gals told us how impressed they were with his shooting and gave him pointers to help him along.
We would both like to give a special thanks to the Bayou Bounty Hunters and everyone that helped us out at the match.
Here are a few pics from the day.
And his take home from his first ever match.

You are a good dad! Many years ago the first I heard or read of thell reed, was in a early guns and ammo magazine. There was pictures exactly like that of theill at a fast draw contest his dad took him to and got him started out on the same way.
Re: OT Son competed in his first Cowboy Match (pic heavy)
Well Rube you got it started now. Good on ya!
I hope you have a good Dillon press for reloading all those .38's.
You need to get Little Rube a handle and get him signed on here at leverguns so we can give HIM a proper CONGRATULATIONS!

How about "Ruberroo"? I once had a friend when we were young. His last name was "Rew" . His wife was expecting and I told him if it was a boy he should name the kid "Kanger".

Great Post!
love to see guys getting their kids interested in the "Shootin' Sports"
Congratulations to your son on his shooting skill, not easy with an ill fitting rifle.

Somewhere there is one of the Sarah Brady people or an ACLU member shaking their fists at the sky and screaming, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
I'm loving it. The way he's indexing his finger and in the one pic standing there with his palm on the holstered weapon shows he knows what he's doing.
Good on him. And good on you.

Re: OT Son competed in his first Cowboy Match (pic heavy)
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. He really had a great day. Heck, we both did. His grandpa was even there to watch him and is the one that was taking most of the pics. I would love to see more kids at the matches.
He went by the Alias of Mark McCain after his fav show of all time, The Rifleman. Not sure if that will be his SASS alias or not. He is going to think on it and we will see what is available.
Next time we go he should have a rifle that fits him and either his own shotgun or will use mine. I bought him some feather light loads but didnt have time to prove to him that they were light loads and the last time he shot my coach gun it was full powered 3" shells and he would not shoot it in front of everyone unless he knew for sure they were lighter than that. Dont blame him for that. I try to make sure he is comfortable shooting so he dont develop a flinch.
Now that we got his first match behind him im eager to see how things develop. It was a fun time and even though I knew he could shoot he really did surprise me even by how well he did and handled things.

Re: OT Son competed in his first Cowboy Match (pic heavy)
Thanks again guys. Its good to see a kid enjoy shooting.
I always think its funny when someone new would find out that my son shoots with me. Its always something like "isnt that dangerous"?
I ask them....would would your kid do if they found a gun, pick it up, point it at something, shoot himself or a friend? I know what my son would do. My son knows about guns....both the dangers and the way to properly respect them. He knows how to shoot, knows how to be safe etc.
Im proud of my boy.

Yeah, we would have had him out there earlier but wanted to get him his own guns and that took a little time. Cost of gun leather, reloading supplies, guns etc.....it starts to add up.....now add my expenses in there also. I love shooting them and next time I will shoot with him. This time I just wanted to watch and enjoy seeing him do his thing and also make sure he knew what he was doing.

That there is inspiring! I'm certain that young man will remember that day for the rest of his life with great fondness. Thanks for introducing another into the fold. Bravo to you both! Thanks for sharing a great day with us.
