That's really a nice looking rifle. Great shape too. Weather or not it's worth that price I have no idea.

Antique...Deluxe XX Checkered Pistol Grip Stock Set...Special Order Extra Length Barrel....38-55.....King Triple Bead Front Sight.....BUT there is less than 50% finish left, on the metal.

It's a bit overpriced, in today's market.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Nice 1894. Special features: special order front sight, octagon barrel, special length barrel & pistol grip. For the pictured amount of bluing... seems a might high... but then, I don't own high end, special feature equipped rifles.

IF he really had a "Cody letter" it would explain that the rifle was actually made in 1901, not 1897. Run, don't walk, away from that one. All is not as it often appears. :|

I agree with Mike D. The sling swivels don't seem right to me. It could be the small screen I'm viewing this on but, I can't see any checkering on the forearm. Looks like a neat gun but a letter from Cody would be a must!

Those sling swivels were available as special order for any Winchester rifle. The main issue is the lack of checkering on the forearm and the date of manufacture. There were no serial numbers higher than 30000 for the year 1897. To suppose that a 102000 numbered 1894 was made in 1897 is a far stretch. He is merely fishing by using Madis' numbers as correct DOMs.

It does not really matter when it was actually made. The ATF goes by the numbers in the book and that says 1897. I too, was a bit perplexed on the checkering (or lack of) on the forend but........the seller says thats all in the letter. He should have posted a pic of that too. Either way, it is possible that the forend was replaced.

Everything "looks" contemporary to the gun. 28" barrels, along with the pistol grip are not found in every street corner gunshop. Add the desirable chambering, double X wood, and the excellent bore, and I'd say that would be a proud rifle to own.

Any rifle with checkering that has seen a good bit of use will always have more wear on the forearm than the grip. It is the natural carrying spot. If the forearm didn't have more wear I would be wary. Looks like an honest old shooter to me.

Jack, the book might say 1897, but the reality of the matter is that the gun does not have "antique" status. When lettered it will fall into the post-1900 collector doldrums, despite the deluxe wood, PG and over length barrel. To me, longer barrels are unappealing. Give me shorter than standard round barrels any day; I'm a fan of round barrel Winchesters anyway. If the gun has an octagon barrel, only rapid taper full and 1/2 octagon ring my chimes. :)

I think it's a fine looking rifle, and wish it was in my gun rack.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Gun Digest 2011 lists a couple of Winchester 94 Custom and High Grade 30-30 rifles - probably from Miroku - Commemorative for Oliver Winchester's birth - 200 years - for only $1959.00. Oliver Winchester's signature in gold is on top of the bolt - who could resist ???

If that's too steep, the High Grade one is only $1469.00.
