OT: Rain Pants That Don't Melt
I"ve always used the Cabelas nylon pants with the taped seams. They work wonderfully, but a spark from a campfire or a momentary touch on a hot motorcycle pipe will put a hole in them in half a heartbeat. Any suggestions without breaking the bank?

The worlds BEST (if heaviest) rain gear is still a Waxed Drover's Coat/ Dryz-a-Bone. I'm afraid that ANYTHING synthetic - even Gore-Tex - will have melting issues. Waxed Cotton (Denim) won't.

Re: OT: Rain Pants That Don't Melt
Probably best way to patch them is get a tent repair, glue and fabric, kit. Glue a patch in place with good adhesive it will hold. Same thing with an air mattress repair kit. I would figure you need something like a good pair of canvas bib overalls. Could be cut down a bit if too hot, just leave enough material to avoid hot pipes. Seems most all of the new rain gear is fragile to heat. Only other type would maybe nomex (you can find surplus flight gear) or Kevlar bikers stuff. But is ain't cheap. Look through a Cheaper than Dirt catalog or maybe Sportsmansguide catalog for surplus nomex outfits. I do seem to remember while stationed in German back in the early 60's seems everyone road motorcycles and there was quite a variety of gear they wore. Seems leather was about the most popular and Wool was popular in some spots and seasons.

Maybe Filson's can take care of you. Since it sounds like leather chaps are expensive anyway, maybe Filson's rain clothes aren't so far out of line anymore.
Re: OT: Rain Pants That Don't Melt
I like the outer layer of the military ECWCS gear. The parka and pants are Goretex and not heavy without the other layers underneath. The sell for ~$50 in the surplus stores around here - which is about half the price of anything that's new made of Goretex.
Politicians and diapers both require frequent changing for the EXACT same reason!
