a hard one to find....usually in terrible condition when found. this one is pretty nice and the bore is excellent:
a distinguishing characteristic of an 1895 [ beyond the serial # ] is the 'hole' in the top of the bolt: a visible safety indicator [ sometimes the bolts get replaced of course ]:
will be shooting it soon. already had some .303 savage ammo loaded for my 1899...so it is off to the range this week! serial # is 593X made in 1895. i have a model 1899 made in 1899 with special order wood, same caliber. now i am a little more content. finding this one took a while!
Great find, and a fine example of an 1895. I've never seen one in sixty years of messing with guns. Understand that they were made for Arthur Savage by Marlin. Does 5,000 guns ring a bell?

Savage brought out the 1895 and tried to interest the army in adopting it. It had a larger and sheet metal magazine, cannot remember the number rounds it was supposed to hold but ten comes to mind. Of course the military had already adopted the Krag so his efforts were wasted. It probably wouldn't have worked under some of the field conditions. I think there was a write up some years back on this event. One of the big things was it used smokeless powder which was just comming in. Just a bit of trivia on the 1895 Savage. The aricle I believe was in the NRA's American Rifleman magazine. Have a good day.
thanks to all. you guys know the details quite well. these originals were made by marlin for savage. and he did still have hopes of selling to the military hence the later 1899 muskets. at the same time that winchester's 1895 came out and was also sold in musket form
marlin factory must have been an interesting place with these rolling off the line at the same time as marlins new 1895 big bore like this one in 45/70 :
should throw in a picture of my winchester 1895 [ 405 ] but cant find it.
you guys have an impressive knowledge of all these details. i am always tickled at what i learn on this board!

yes, i like guns that are in nice condition, but ones that look like they have 'been there and done that'.....not just for collecting but good honest sound usable firearms. much more fun [ and less worry ] to take such guns out on trips and put them to the purpose for which they were meant.

The .303 Savage was their answer the Winchester's .30 W.C.F.(.30-30). Nice guns that I wouldn't mind owning.
Speaking of '95 Marlins. I ogled a VERY nice .45-90 SRC at Reno last year, but the $7500. price tag gave me the shakes. I was going for 1886s and passed on the Marlin. Prob'ly should have worked on a bargain, but wasn't smart enough. Those are scarce guns.

I had one that looked just like it 40 years ago. Didnt know what I had and got traded out of it. Now that I think about it, I am almost positive mine had a octogon barrel. Was that possible?
