OT- Question- what free email service is good to use?

Post by Mac in Mo »

I am in need of a free email provider. I have been looking at different sites, but the reviews of every one are terrible. I would like to ask if some of you could take a few minutes to suggest a provider, for personal use. One with IM capability would be preferred. Thanks for your time.

The only "free" email service I have any experience with is Yahoo. I believe they have IM as well, but I don't know cos I don't use it.
Yahoo is kind of a pain in the butt to use, but it is always there even when my regular email server has crashed.

Yahoo or Juno will get 'er done, but not all that well if you have large amounts of data like pics or files....You run out of free pretty quick.

Thanks. I'll check out JUNO. I am aware that nothing is FREE, that is just what these services are called. Most have ads that pay for the service as far as I know. I am still checking things out.

I've got both a yahoo address and a gmail one. Yahoo is primarily for mail for *everyone* and only a select few know my gmail addy. As far as the latter, I also use it for file storage, I send an email in with an attachment.

Yahoo IM is not too bad and common, my daughter used it a lot in earlier years.

I use Firefox with adblock and flashblock extensions so I get zero ads and all the rest of that stuff that bounces, flashes, sparkles, etc.

Feel free to post if any more questions or PM.

I've been a gmail user since it's inception and happy with it. I also have a Yahoo account and it is comparable but I prefer the convenience of gmail having all links on my opening page. Gmail also has the largest storage capacity and seem to increase it on a regular basis. I used to use Juno but their limited storage and ability to send attachments turned me away from them.

I use gmail and yahoo. IMO, gmail is WAY better than yahoo in terms of speed, features and ease of use. However, last time I checked, you cannot register on this forum with a gmail address, apparently because lots of spammers, etc. use it. Yahoo did just come out with an upgrade, though, so they might be in gmail's league now. We'll see.

There are a couple of forums that do not like gmail addresses. An email message to the forum admin will get you signed up as it can be allowed by the admin. I have only had to do this a couple of times for the dozen or so forums that I belong to.

Those type of forums don't like ANY free mail service.

I've used hotmail for over 10 years and been reasonably happy (had Juno before that) but switched over to Gmail and now use my hotmail account as my 'everyone knows it' address.

GMail works much better.

I have a hotmail, yahoo and gmail account. After all, they are free. They are also different, generally work, and provide varying degrees of separation from the spammers, etc. My accounts have been spoofed, as some of you might know so I dropped the address books almost entirely. Some forums, such as this one, won't accept gmail or hotmail and some fewer won't accept yahoo. As Terry says, there's no free lunch. Moreover, to ridicule something provided for free as being the recipient of poor reviews seems a bit odd to me. Let's say your are very hungry, have no money and come to my house for a handout. Are you going to turn back a sandwich because I don't have mayonnaise or don't offer chips? Are you going to try to specify your drink?
Sincerely,

Hobie

I have a g-mail account because it's easy to connect to my phone app.

I'm sure your internet provider has webmail. Between work and home, I have three IP e-mail accounts.
Before I ever open those, though, I go to the webmail site for the IP and review my inbox, cull the spam, reply and delete what I don't want cluttering my home computer.
When I open the e-mail account on my computer, then, I am only downloading mail that I want to store.

In the case of roadrunner, they give you 100Mb of storage, which really helps to keep your pc clean.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. I've been offline for a few weeks. I do have a regular email though my isp. I am in need of another email for some basic communications. I think I'll try the yahoo service and see how it goes. Seems to be a popular service.
I don't trust the reviews that I read online, too easy for competitors to post.
Thanks for your time, Kevin

Have used Yahoo for almost 20 years and rarely had a problem. I prefer Outlook as an e-mail platform, but for free, Yahoo works just fine. I have several accounts with them, and my wife, Y2K and daughter have accounts as well.

The new upgraded Yahoo seems pretty good so far. Quite a bit faster than it was before the upgrade.
