OT - cartridge box
A couple weeks ago I asked you all about recipes for the little .32 S&W (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36539). I got around to loading 50 rounds over the weekend, and decided to start with Goex FFFg black powder. These loads are intended to be tried out in a cylinder conversion for my Uberti "Colt" 1849 Pocket Revolver clone.
Well, I got these loaded, and then looked for an empty cartridge box. I normally have several around; I prefer those made by MTM, and settled on the "smoke blue" color a long time ago. I normally load for larger calibers though, and just didn't have a small box lying around to use with these diminutive rounds.
Well, I guess I could have just put the rounds in a snack bag, but what fun would that be?
So, I decided to make my own cartridge box, and try to make it look old-fashioned.
First, I decided on how the bullets would get placed in the box itself, and the dimensions of the box. To do this I borrowed some of the kids Legos, and made a jig.
Here's another look at the jig:
So then I took some measurements, and grabbed some carboard. This was a piece off a pad of paper.
Here I have the bottom portion of the box cut out and glued, in clamps drying, and the top cut out.
Here is the top drying, and fitting it to the bottom.
Meanwhile, I figured out the design of the label, printed it, and here's what it looks like.
Here's a close-up of the top label
And one of the side label
Here's another view.
And the last one, of the top and side together.
A little off-center, but not bad for my first try. What do you think?

I think that's great! Everybody is getting into showing off their talents. Really, it looks great. Isn't it Cheyenne Cartridge Co. that makes aftermarket old timey ammo boxes? You could give them a run for their money with a little investment.

Re: OT - cartridge box
Very cool! I didn't think to look up their website - and I even have a couple of their boxes! I just did a search on antique cartridge boxes and found one from the "Creedmoor Cartridge Company of Barberton, Ohio". I liked the pattern, so used it as a template. I'll have to try another pattern for the next 50!kimwcook wrote:I think that's great! Everybody is getting into showing off their talents. Really, it looks great. Re: OT - cartridge box
Thanks Mike! I showed the box to one of the Scout Leaders at Y2K's Troop meeting tonight, and he almost jumped out of his skin when he saw it was made in our town. He then realized I made the box. He actually thought it was an original for a second (probably because we were outside and the light wasn't so good)!rjohns94 wrote:Jay, well done. I am very impressed!! Clever label.

Well I'm glad you did get a little time on your hands to turn out that neat project...Look what we got!...There's too much hurrying goin' on in this old world.... Very nice
Edit
I’ll bet at least as much time went into producing that label as went into making the box...Like ciphering out how much space to allow for the fold areas, sizing the text to stay within the borders top to bottom side to side, but be as large as possible and say what you want it to say in the given space...I don’t know what kind of printer you have, but if you set it up to print that by telling the printer all of that, then you got a neat printer and the skills to make it do what it ought to... Only way I could do it would be to assemble oriented bit maps of the top, sides and ends with spaces for the folds to produce a final image, then have the printer print me a picture the correct size... Well done Jay.. Maybe this could go in the members skills showcase.

I like that, I may have to try that myself. I've always liked the old cardboard boxes that rifle cartridges came in. The ones with the cover that slides off the top and has cardboard "squares" inside to keep the cartridges separated.
Nice job!

Very nice Jay!
Now if we could only figure out how to make my Dillon Press alternate and stack the rounds that way as they came off of it -- it sure would save us a lot of time packing!

Re: OT - cartridge box
Jay,
Do you have a direct link to that Creedmore Ctg Co? I poked around in there and didn't find it.
The 5-4-5 type staggered cartridges is a bit new to me. All the old boxes I have were put in in rows of 5.
Looks good to me.

Now I'm wondering how I did it - sounds a lot more complicated when you put it that way!Ben_Rumson wrote:Well I'm glad you did get a little time on your hands to turn out that neat project...Look what we got!...There's too much hurrying goin' on in this old world.... Very nice

Really, it was some measurement, and some trial and error using a sheet of cardboard and a regular HP color printer. I used the Lego jig to stack the bullets, and then measured the space I would need. Cutting the carboard was easy. it was a bit bigger than I wanted, so I added a few shims of cardboard in the box. This made the cartridges tight, and reinforced the walls of the box - so I will keep that design element.
I copied the "picture" of the .32 S&W round from a picture on the web of the Creedmoor box - doing a screen print then pasting it into "Paint". I then cut the actual "picture" of the round out, and pasted this into Excel. In Excel I worked up the printing for the rest of the box. I did all of this while watching a movie with the kids the other night.
I printed it once on the B&W printer in my home office. Compared that to the actual box, and moved things around a bit to fit. Trial and error method - took me 3 tries.
I guess I just tried to keep it simple - I don't have the time for anything else!

Not a direct link - he's where I found the picture:
http://www.rtgammo.com/
Click on the "50 Round Pistol Caliber" hyperlink on the left side of the page, then page down a bit.
I can't recall where I saw the 5-4-5 row design, but remembered seeing it, so I tried it and it worked. I think I will go with a more traditional 5x10 layout, where every other round is inverted. I'll keep messing with this until I get it exactly the way I want it, but I am pleased with my first pass!
Re: OT - cartridge box
Jay
this is a really good idea!
and much better looking than the modern plastic boxes...
I have seen online somewhere, this guy makes exact duplicates
of the antique boxes and gets like $9/box
Started mine last night....

Re: OT - cartridge box
Jay,
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to open at all.
Years ago I bought a box of Norma .357 Mag ammo that came in a cardboard box with the dividers for the cartridges. All rounds were nose down in rows of 5. That is a box I'd like to have again to up size to .45 Colt.
