Post by HEAD0001 »

I found this rifle at Cabela's in Rogers, MN. I do not know how to post a direct link. Can some one help me with that???

There is a hole on the left side of the receiver. Is that normal??? What do you guy's think of the rifle??? The cartridge??? I have never had one of the cartridge's. would it make a good hog and deer rifle??? Is it worth their asking price??? Help me out with this one guy's. Thanks, Tom.

If the price is right I would buy it Quick. I know alot of CAS shooters looking for the piece.

Yes the 44-40 is an excellent round if you reload. If you do not reload expect to pay $30.00 for a box of 50 rounds.

It would be an excellent deer & hunting piece.

My hope is that some day soon Marlin will again chamber the 94CB Limited in 44-40 with the 24" octagonal barrel.

I have a 94CB limited 24" octagon barrel in 44 Mag/special, and would gladly trade straight across for a 44-40 94 24" octagon.

I shoot CAS and have a Uberti 73 Carbine in 44-40, also a Rossi 92 in 44-40. I would love to add a marlin 44-40 to the mix.

I sold one just like that about 18 months ago, still new in the box. It went for $900 on Gunbroker. For Cabelas the price isn't bad, but I think it's a bit higher than they usually go.
I just checked completed auctions and one went for $861 used but like new. The other was NIB and went for $1,000.

Tom,
The hole at the top rear of the reciever is th locating hole for the extractor peg. The other two spots that might look like holes are the cross bolt safety and the trigger plate screw.

I don't know if the price is good or not. I do know that if I had the money I'd go for it. I've wanted a 44-40 for a long time and this would really be a nice one.

Yes if you put the bullet where it needs to go, it's a good hog/deer round.

Thanks for your replies guy's. I am thinking seriously about going for this one. I am just not 100% sure about the cartridge. Is it a true 44 caliber??? Or is it a .429??? I was wondering if I could use the bullets I cast for my 44 magnum's. I know I can lok it up, and I will. But it is fun talking about it. The wood looks pretty good on this one. Tom.

The .44-40 used to be a .427" bullet, but newer guns have been fitted with .44 mag barrels that are chambered for .4-40, so your .429" bullets will work great!

Yep, as long as they are 200 grainers. :) The heavier 44 mag bullet MIGHT not work through the action due to OAL.

I think $1000 is on the high side for that rifle, FWIW. There is a Marlin 1894 Cowboy limited in 44-40 at a shop here for $700 + some change.

Rifle

Post by HEAD0001 »

I have not bought the rifle yet. I was originally looking for a 44 magnum or a 45-70. I have several of both cartridges. What I was looking for was a Marlin lever action with upgraded wood . By upgraded I mean AAA grade. I found one but it is in 44-40. I have no experience with this cartridge. What is holding me back is the fact that I have tons of components for the 44 magnum and the 45-70. And I am not in a hurry. I think I am going to pass on the 44-40. Tom.
