Off on Safari

Post by piller »

Ladies and Gentlemen, and those of you who choose to not want to be described by either term, I am flying from Dallas to New York where I will spend the night. While there I hope to be able to see Papabear from this forum. On Sunday morning I fly to South Africa to go on a hunt with Chris Troskie Safaris. 86er set this up for me. I will be hunting a zebra and a blue wildebeest. I also will be getting a warthog. I am using a Marlin 1895GS for my primary rifle and a Remington 700 in 30-06 with a scope for my backup weapon. The ammunition for the 45-70 is the +P 405 grain loads from Grizzly which 86er recommended. 86er has used these bullets with a lot of success, so I am following his advice. For the 30-06 I am using handloaded 180 grain Nosler Accubond bullets over a load just .5 grain below Hodgdon's maximum load for H414. I seem to have better accuracy when I go a little below maximum. The Marlin has a Skinner peep sight, and at 100 yards it will put the bullets I am using into a 9 inch circle when I am shooting off sticks and doing it where I am not holding the sticks, I do not have any control of when the person with the sticks puts them down, and taking less than 5 seconds from gun at port arms to bullet in target. This is not great accuracy from me, but I am satisfied with it for this trip as it is within the kill zone and the game is not considered dangerous. If I have a little more time to take the shot, I can make it a lot better, but 5 seconds is not a lot of time to get all the steps done right.

When I return, I will be posting about the trip and putting up pictures for several days. I plan on taking a bunch of pictures and putting up the best 20 or 30.

I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures Brian.
I'm planning on making such trip myself soon (once I get all my kids married off and their college paid for)
Hopefully within a year or two the wife and I can get to Afrika.
Be a good forward scout for me :D I'll be eagerly awaiting the full report.

Have fun!

Bring back some good pics and at least one big 'ol stinky hide for your bride to complain about for the next 20 years.

Rather amusingly a friend just recently (last month) came back from safari.

18 animals over about a week and a half IIRC in 2 parts of South Africa.

Total costs including taxidermy somewhere in the $30k range.

He was getting chewed out by some chick at work for hunting, etc etc etc.

He just says to her "I fed three African villages more meat than they've seen in a year, for a week. What have you done for the poor and hungry again?"

She didn't say another word.

MrMurphy.....you hit it right on the head. I had a similar idiot attempt to upbraid me for shooting Elephant. I explained that at the time of his death, said Elephant was well on his way to destroying the entire maize crop of a small village. Instead, they were able to salvage most of their crop....which was the major portion of the upcoming year's food supply...And got a huge pile of red meat to supplement. When I asked the critics if they preferred to pony up the cash for a year's supply of food for those folks....the silence was deafening.
