I was a buckskinner for more than twenty years and wore a lot of capotes. The best way,if you are handi with a needle, is buy a 4 or 6 point Hudson Bay Blanket and order a pattern fron the likes of Track of the Wolf and make it yourself. It is very easy.
Check the web there are makers available. hth Doug

yes, there was a post. I have two, one made from a hudson bay blanket in Green which I purchased here, and one in a shorter brown that was made local for me. both are very warm. I have used them during the late season flintlock deer season for years here in Pa. Highly recommended.

It's pronounced KA poat hard "K" and poat as in boat. At least that's the way we say it down here.
I've also heard it pronounced with the softer ca as in car with the poat on the end.

I made one years ago from a 2 point candy stripe Hudsons Bay blanket. It was ok for moderate weather, but needed help in colder weather. I ended up lining it with black polar fleece, and another miracle insulating fabric (thinsulate?) in the sleeves, with a slick fabric lining in the sleeves to make it easier to get on and off. I also shortened mine to hip length, using the part I cut off the bottom to double up the shoulders, and it has deerskin fringes in the shoulder seams.
This outfit has great service on blankets and I would imagine their Capotes are done very nicely.

I've been tempted to get one myself but living in Las Vegas makes it seem kind of ridiculous. I can see myself on the strip in August with my Capote. HA!

The ones typically seen are copies of 1890s garments. The fur trade era garments were thinner wool, well tailored, not sewn with yarn, and lacked fringe. I was a buckskinner/living historian for 25 years.
