Looks kinda like Northern AZ just as you climb the Kaibab Plateau. You may be looking east back toward the Vermilion Cliffs. Is this a possibility?

I would guess southeast Utah, maybe around Mexican Hat. Just a guess.

Could be anywhere in the southern intermountain west. Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona.

I think it looks like the highway out of Prescott going south towards Peeples Valley. My wife said it don't look like it to her. Like Mike said could be anyplace down there.

The truth is, I really do not know where this is. The pic obviously looked good to me / us or it wouldn't be on the hard drive, but I have no idea.
There is some cars and people on the ledge in the upper left corner of the pic so there is a road there.

Maybe somebody will know.

I remember a scene similar to this in west TX many years ago. It was off I20, but before it was interstate.

Note where the lower road intersects the cliff.. from there follow the cliff edge until you see what looks like two ovals in the ground below bisected by the cliff face...like maybe the lower road that’s obscured heads toward to them.. They kinda look like dried up or semi muddy ponds ... could they be a clue?

That photo was taken from near the top of the Moki Dugway near Mexican Hat, Utah. Here's a link to a web site where you can see a pic taken apparently from where the cars are parked in Joes photo. Scroll down the page to near the bottom, and you'll recognize the location. The dirt road that takes off to the left from the main road far below is the drive through the Valley of the Gods. I've been there twice, and it's a neat place. Also the location is not far from Monument Valley that sits astride the Utah-Arizona border. In Joe's shot notice the pyramid-like butte barely visible above the cars. It's much more prominent in the picture in the link.

Joe,

You're surely welcome. A short drive from the Moki Dugway you'll find Muley Point overlook. It offers a fantastic view, mostly to the south, and you can see the buttes in Monument Valley about 15 or 20 miles off. Also, nearby is Goosenecks State Park where the San Juan River makes a series of namesake meanders. And a bit farther off to the north lies Natural Bridges National Monument that is well worth a look. Then to the northstill farther are the big name national parks -- Arches and Canyonlands as well as many lesser know scenic spots. Spectacular country!

Umm, B.B., I really think you should look at Cimarron Red's link. It's in Utah.

I could be wrong, I live at cedar city utah about 110 miles from the spot I think it is on the arizona strip in arizonna. I still belive the site to be about 13 miles east of jacob lake on alt hyway 89 looking east. I followed a creeping slow truck down the switchbacks about a year ago almost on the spot of the picture. Who knows? Maybe we are both wrong, but I am tempted to take my computer and camera over there and compare, but its not worth the 240 mile round trip to prove a point.

Theodore Roosevelt N.P. -- What a beautiful place! I've visited the South Unit, twice. I would surely like to get to Elkhorn Ranch and the North Unit. I had considered going this summer, but life intervened.

Just to dispel any lingering doubt about the site of Joe's picture, below is a link to some more photos of Utah, including some of the edge of Cedar Mesa and the head of the Moki Dugway. The photos are arrayed in groups of three. Scroll about half way down the page to the picture of the Moki Dugway sign. Click on the picture to enlarge it. This is image number 58. Advance to pictures number 60 and 61. These shots were taken at or very near the spot where Joe’s was taken. The lighting is much different from Joe’s as these are lit by the sun low in the west. And, in this raking light details are better seen. But the view is essentially the same.

Picture #61 looks like it could be the one I posted. Except for no cars and bit closer zoom.

Hey, Bill,

I'm real familiar with being wrong! In fact I think I have a patent on some aspects of it.

I'm familiar with the drive from Jacob Lake to Lee's Ferry, and I agree that Joe's pic looks like that view also.

I like your part of Utah very much.
