Another Levergunned Antelope
The Northwest area of Nebraska Territory offers a unique landscape for hunting Pronghorn Antelope. This year, the region is enjoying a bumper crop of Prickly Pear Cactus.
I was able to avoid most of them.
Way out of rifle range, there's a herd of 2 Dozen goats 700 yards out there....they won't let me get any closer though. I just sit and watch their behavior to see what I can learn. So far, I've learned they have a healthy appetite!
Across the vast landscape...a teeny cloud can throw quite a large shadow. I watched a lot of these slide by in slow motion. A flock of Southbound Sandhill Cranes cruised by overhead. They have a distinct chatter that carries well across the high plains.
Hunting the different corners of this area requires a bit of travel...and you never know what awaits you over the next hill. This herd was being moved down the road a mile or so. 300 head I was told. It took 30 minutes for them to make their way past me on the narrow roadway.
I'm pretty far from the pavement here, searching for another herd of Antelope to stalk. The ocean of grass in these parts...is frequently broken by terrain like this.
Jutting upwards out of the grass, this catches my eye and I have to investigate. Its a government survey marker from 1941. The nearest road was a couple of miles away, and I had to wonder what kind of truck they drove way out here that year.
On day five....I returned to this pasture where I had previously glassed a very large buck tending his herd. After a 300 yard stalk and another 100 yards on hands and knees, I made it to the top of a shallow rise where i had hoped to be in a good position for a shot. In the time it took me to get there though...he had strolled another 500 yards away. Scanning the closer elements of the herd...I found this smaller Buck within range and took the shot. The Savage 99 in 250-3000 is a favorite of mine; this is the fifth goat to fall to this rifle.
245 yards
46 pounds of chow from this fella
Next trip out....I'm gonna spend more time there. Why rush a good thing???

Awesome! Man, if there is one thing I love to see, its game taken with a levergun.

Re: Another Levergunned Antelope
That's got to be a very satisfying experience - having to stalk and creep and get close. Congrats! And enjoy that venison.
