Hopefully 86er will come along and give us some insight. He is a qualified shotgun maker, if you didn't know. To me, the engraving and the front end just look like a fairly talented amateur did them. I couldn't do better, but that doesn't mean much.

To my untrained eyes the engraving looked OK. OK as in an entry level gun.
What irked me was the buggered up screws. That just ruined the overall decent appearance to me.

To me it looks unfinished, like the person started it, then lost interest, or time...or decided they needed the money more then an engraved shotgun.

Buggered screws and some aligned, some not. There's some issues here to be questioned.

FWIW, there's nothing wrong with the engraving - it's standard L/C.Smith engraving for the Ideal Grade.

There IS, however, something wrong with the auction - the seller started it about $2500 too high.

Here's another that recently sold for less than $2700 : http://www.gunsamerica.com/935000774/Gu ... hotgun.htm#

I agree 100% , that the engraving is factory original . Matter of fact i have a 12 gauge Ideal grade in my safe as I write this that looks identical although my screw heads are in a little better shape !

As to the price I would say $2500-3500 . Although I recently saw a Parker VH 20 gauge that had been reblued , re color cased and the wood refinished go for $3500 .

I guess my engraving tastes are different then what the factory thought would cut the mustard. $5,200 starting price? I think someone's been nipping at the bottle.

I don't know, but something about the wood doesn't look quite "right" to me. The forend looks sort of clunky. :|

Look way too shakey to be factory. I'd guess it's a knockoff to make a cheaper model look like an entry level Ideal.

My L.C. Smith looks just like that without the engraving and buggered-up screws. It only cost $375 though.

I haven't seen that many L. C. Smiths, but the ones I've seen had what I believe is referred to as a "splinter" forend.

What, when they first came out? :D My LC cost less than that and no I didn't buy it even close to new. And, it needs some TLC.
