Pancakes anyone??

Post by Chuck 100 yd »

Pancake holsters that is.
I just finished a group of four . Two for me and two for a customer.
The larger one holds a Judge (Night Court Judge)
Cool gun!!
The smaller one holds my Ruger SP101 3" .357
One of my favorite guns.

I have a knife sheath to make for a guy next and after that I am going to be back into stock making for a bit.
I have to make a stock for an old Stevens rolling block boys rifle. This one has a one piece stock. I understand that was a very rare model . I will post a pic when I get it done.

Chuck, do you hand stitch those or do you use a machine?

Rusty
I hand stitch.
I lay out the stitch locations with a little tool like a cowboy spur in the damp leather. After it dries I drill all the holes on my drill press using a #55 wire size drill (some use 1/16"). then saddle stitch using a heavy five cord linen waxed thread (of about 30lb. strength) with a needle at each end. There are two threads going through each hole. That makes for a quite strong seam.
You run one needle through the first hole.center up the thread so you have the same amount of thread on each side with a needle on each. Then both needles go through the next hole from opposite sides. snug up the stitch and repeat until you are done. then back stitch for a couple holes and snip off the tails. you are done.
Very time consuming. a couple hours are burned sewing one holster.

nothing better than a "pancake" style holster--nice job--I remember when the design first came out--that makes me old--great... :)

Thanks Chuck I appreciate the explanation. I always thought I'd like to try my hand at making a holster but I just never thought I could make one come out right.

Maybe... just maybe?????

TMair , Thanks for the compliments (all you guys) !!

I don`t really want to do it that much right now. I will retire at least part time this summer and hope to have a little time to really get into this and some other crafts as well.
I could be just swamped with orders if I was looking to be.

Rusty , It is a fun hobby and not at all hard to learn. I just started about a year ago and learned the meager amount I know off the internet.
Look here.
Tandy has lots of videos on their site.

Cas city has a leather forum that is great. Good people who love to help.
