bp suggestions
my son bought a used bp F.Elli Pietta 1858 army .36 revolver for $100.00 . He is not working now, but wants to buy the loading equipment for it when he can. Any suggestions about bullets, powders, equipment from the black powder lovers. Thanks

Re: bp suggestions
The beauty thing about a C&B pistol is it really doesn't require much in the way of "loading equipment". It's built into the gun.rossim92 wrote:my son bought a used bp F.Elli Pietta 1858 army .36 revolver for $100.00 . He is not working now, but wants to buy the loading equipment for it when he can. All he really needs to begin are consumables.
Any OEM swaged .36 balls will be fine
get 1 tin each #10 & #11 caps. Try em both & pick the most reliable.
order some 3F from Grafs. Kik is good, Swiss is better. If you want to play with Subs, go ahead. But I don't recommend it. Later, after he's into it he can track down friends and do a bulk buy of 3F. Cheaper that way.
dig in the cupboard and find the Crisco. There are other/better bullet lubes but Crisco is handy for a start.
Get a simple powder flask. I like the black poly one by TC. You can trim the spout down to a specific grain volume and not have to muck about with powder measures.
And that's it... for starters anyway. There's lots of money to be spent on gadgets, and I would definitely recommend ordering a spare cylinder too, but off the get-go that's all he needs to get hooked...

If the moderators don't mind me pointing you elsewhere... This posting on The Proper Use of a Cap and Ball Revolver has some really good info in it.

Cabela`s sells a starting kit on their web site that might do the trick.

Re: bp suggestions
I like wonder wads instead of crisco - but I understand why it's recommended (cheap).
If he has trouble finding black, then Pyrodex P is fine - much easier to find.

Re: bp suggestions
Make sure and use either Crisco over the loaded balls/bullets or Wonder Lube Wads under them and top of the powder. One chainfire and he'll probably never come close to a CB pistol or muzzleloader again. That's if he doesn't get hurt.
