Lost my best friend today..

Post by 2ndovc »

Finally had to take that last ride to the vet today.

The old girl has been fighting kidney failure for several months. She then came down with some heavy
inner ear infection in November. She was doing pretty well until Monday evening when she took a bad fall.
Just didn't want to get up any more. I kept telling her I wouldn't give up on her until she did. Well I think
she finally had enough. She went very peacefully and the people at our vet are the greatest.

She was tough and fearless but She was also the sweetest and most affectionate animal I've ever known.

I had fifteen wonderful years with her since that day she ran up and jumped on the front seat of my truck when
some kids near my old office were chasing her. No question that she was going home with me.

I will miss her terribly but I know that there's going to be two wonderful dogs waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge.
I'm sure Abbey will be very happy to play with her old friend Tasha again.

Sorry to hear. Always tough when this happens. Went through the exact same thing last year. My dog died in my arms the night before I was going to take him to be put down. I have found that getting a new dog soon helps to ease the pain quite a bit. Again, my condolences.

Sorry, 2ndovc.

THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG

"There is one best place to bury a dog.
"If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call - come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again.

"And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.

"People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing.

"The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master."

My best HUMAN friend passed away few years ago and in accordance to his dying wish. I had him cremated and we mixed his ashes with the ashes he had kept of his wife when she passed on..Then we spread the whole lot of it on the graves of his dogs he had buried over the years..
Dogs are definately family .

Truly sorry to hear it. Putting your best friend down is one of the hardest thngs to do, even when it's truly time.

I had to take my guy in yesterday (Fri). Just buried him in the yard today, next to Molly, who I lost the day after Christmas. I also find getting another dog soon helps. It doesnt take anything away from the old friend, but helps fill that empty spot in your heart, and gives a good dog another chance.

Sorry to hear that. Losing two that close together has to be rough.

We have three other dogs in the house and even though they are all great Abbey was my dog.
There's a huge empty space around here today.

Friend to Friend
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

Thanks again Guys. It's been a tough couple of days. Kind of glad to be back at work to give me something else to think about.

Andrew,

Abbey was a Boxer / Dane mix. Before she turned grey she looked like a 1/2 scale Great Dane.

Hopefully I won't have to do this again for awhile. Lucy our Great Dane is only four and the other two are 2 and 1 1/2.

Appreciate all the thoughts. It helps to get it out.

They sure don't. Even 15 years wasn't enough.

I've never delt with loss well. I've had lots of pets. When I was a kid my dad would let me have just about anything but a dog. Thing is the only thing I wanted was a dog.

First thing I did when I got out of college was get a dog. A big sweet Black Lab. Abbey was my second dog. We had been thinking my Lab needed a playmate and Abbey fit perfectly.
Her name came my favorite Beatles album and I got her off the street.

It's been a couple of very emotional days. Every time I walk past her favorite spot I just want to sit and cry. She was my best friend and I will miss her as long as I live.

I know she's in a better place and it's comforting that she is no longer suffering but that doesn't help that my best friend is gone.

Sorry for the melt down. Been a rough day.

I go thru this a lot after losing one, but I still terribly miss the all ones I've lost over the years. It's always there, the feeling of loss, and missing them, just with a new dog, some part of you is filled up with the love of that new one. At least that's how it seems to me, and why I don't wait long to find another dog. I have a 2 yr old female located, I'm going to see her in the next few days. I'm already a bit excited to see her, and a little nervous.

No words can describe the hurt. Dogs just get it. They live for the minute, love for life, and set an example no human can match. I have been where you are and will be again. We all know the hurt is coming, but what they add to our lives makes the price seem small in comparison. When the hurt allows, rejoice in the fact that you are one of the fortunate few who have had such a good friend. In balance, thank the higher power for your good luck.

The Bible also says that "all creatures" will be by Gods side in the end (don't recall exactly how it was put, or where, but a good concordance will tell).
