2400 in 45-70

Post by two bit okie »

I see on a couple of sights loads for 2400 in the 45-70, but there is no mention of filler. Since I know that 2400 will JUST fill a 44 mag, shoud filler be used with smokeless if it doesnt at least fill the case 75%. bullets will be cast only in these loads.

It's not necessary to use a filler with 2400 but quite a few shooters use it believing that it produces less variation in fps which could result in more consistant/tighter groups. I've recently tried it in my rifles with no decernible difference in group size. It doesn't seem to make any difference to me but some of the shooters who reccommend using it know more about this practice than I do.

+1 to all the above.

I like 2400 as my go-to load under a Gould 320.

Lyman #47: I don't use filler, but lyman shows 1/2gr Polyester fiber 5/8"sqx1/4"thick over powder.

You could look at a max load of IMR Trail Boss. That'll fill the case and give traditional velocity. Check the IMR web site - they have reduced load data listed.

Accurate 5744 is often used in blackpowder cases too. I have had good luck with it in my .45-90 under 325 gr Beartooth cast bullets.

Lighter loads of 2400 without a bit of dacron or even toilet paper to hold the powder to the rear of the case caused many detonations in my 45-70. Scarry stuff. I no longer use 2400 in this cartridge as a result of too many booming, case scorching, ball of fire the size of a beachball muzzle flashes from no filler!

Now folks are going to tell me that there is no such thing as detotation from using 2400 without something to hold it in place, but I know what I had happen without dacron or TP to hold the powder in place. Never again.........
