Mescal , With spring here yes as his mama has shown him where the winter grub was I think the wolves got her he was only a 1/4 mile from my place if the preditors dont get him he'll do ok. If I could get him down to my place the wolves wont get him there and he can eat all the hay he wants. danny

They are so cute in an ugly sort of way. I got used to seeing them when i went thru Canada and Alaska. But momma was always close by and didnt look none to friendly. Never could get anything but a blurry pic of them cuz I wasnt stopping to try her patience.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Swamp donkey scratching an itch
We live right in town, although about two blocks from the edge of the mountain with all wilderness beyound. A couple of days ago at almost noon I looked out and seen about a year old deer on our front yard. While I have seen them walking down the street at night, never in the middle of the day before. My wife loves deer and took pictures. I sure hope it hooked up with its herd. Many here get killed by traffic.
Re: Swamp donkey scratching an itch
Hope you're able to get him down to your place. Maybe a trail of apple slices, carrots or something else that wouldn't particularly attract wolves? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Danny, my family always enjoys your posting and pictures. Hope the little fella makes it ok. Your beef is looking great too. That's some fine looking hay in the shed, what grass is it, do you raise it ?

Alaskan moose lack the proper bacteria in their gut to be able to digest hay. They would actually starve if all they had to eat was hay. I wonder if the moose down south are any different?

Re: Swamp donkey scratching an itch
AkRay I imagine it is like when they transition from summer feed to winter feed then back again Ive had cow moose come in on my hay feeder and homestead me they'd lay by it keep the stock off , same way with a molasses tub and they love the alfalfa hay. I think if a moose elk or deer was in poor health they couldnt make the jump to hay as like you said their stomach flora would take time to get to work. danny
