.358 Savage

Post by Mescalero »

A couple of years ago I wrote about finding a Savage 99 .358 in the junkpile.
I am now starting to work on it.
It needs to be reblued, but I need polishing advice it is not bad, but needs to be polished out.
Any ideas?

I decline to give advice on the grounds that I can't see it.

Sounds like a great project! :!:

You won't be sorry... I have one. hell on whitetails..
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.

The blue is " motteled " for lack of a better term, bare metal is showing through; but there is no rust.

Fellow here who used to do some guiding got an old on a little rough on the outside and had it hard chromed - I am sure Robar would be good to - used it for a back up and lender. I liked the way it turned out - didn't have to be concerned at all about the finish.

I went with a friend a month or two ago across the mountain and into the Shennendoah Valley to a place called Tom's Brooke Virginia to pick up a Savage 99 in 358 WIN . My friend bought it off Gunbroker .

Anyway after we got back here he decided to reblue it and put a new buttstock on the rifle . Stock was cut off short for a smaller person . After my gunsmith buddy relbued it in the hot salt tank and put it back together the old gun looked right decent and it doesn't shoot bad either !

Sand it real hard with #80 grit. (wet 'n dry) Then soak it in salt water for two months. After that you need to use it as a tomato stake for 3 seasons. Then...........take that baby huntin'! :D

start with 240 and end with 320 -----------Sixgun

If you are going to hunt it hard..the Robar is nice but I think Cerokote is even better...if you are wanting original (which I would on a very covetted rare gun as that)..Id send it to Fords Refinishing in Fla...they are absolute sticklers for perfection...they redid one of my Pythons that was purchased tired and worn and it came back looking and operating as new for a bit over 250 bucks  I always wanted one of those 99's in 358Win

I’d Naval Jelly the exterior before hitting it with the wet or dry.. This will remove the existing blue practically instantly & cut down on the time spent sanding down past the blue and let you see the true metal itself...You may want to ovoid the interior if isn’t too messed up... Here’s a pic of my 99 E where the polish lines are visible... Looks like 350 - 400 grit to me...

That's what I was wondering,

-will wet remove the blue without leaving streaks?
-how do you get the 'tight spots' without getting cross hatched looking metal?
-do you follow up with a polishing wheel or something?

I guess I need to find a nice gun refinishing how-to...

I took a lot of woodworking classes... But I've never worked much with 'finish grade' metal...

Yeah the one my friend just bought and had totally redone he paid about $800 for it before he did anything to it !

Another sold the week before that he bid on and I think that one went for $1200 .

I've always thought in the later years of the 99 , that the 358 , 375 and 284 were kinda rare .

The foul out goes right from cleaning to clean, it still looks bad and I keep getting lead out.

Mesci, sounds like a neat project. Please, keep us informed. Lead can make a real mess once it start's depositing in a barrel. It generally doesn't take long before it is real thick. Some Choreboy over a jag/brush tight down the barrel will strip it out. Good luck.

Try lightly sanding the rod Mescalero...might help.

Choreboy is a brand of all copper scouring pad. You should find it near the SOS/Brillo pads.

The thing about Chore Boy is that it's pure copper and very "aggressive" - much more so than copper or bronze wool - since the coils are made of flat wire rather than round wire.

It cleans bores rather well, but is also good in suppressors, which is why the BAT men decided that they can claim it to be a "component" if the so choose...
